Mt. Akaiwa
We got back safe and sound before dark. I heard a woodpecker today which is a rarity. My mother country, New Zealand, doesn't have woodpeckers, but I've heard them 3 times ( that I'm aware of ) since I came to Japan. The 1st time was in 2004 in a camping ground above Beppu City, Kyushu. The 2nd time was when hiking in the beach forest in Kamiseya, Miyazu. And this time was in the area of Mt. Sugiyama. All 3 times were in spring. I also heard lots of deer moving in the forest nearby but couldn't see them. However, riding down the mountain I saw a doe that fled in a panic as I came flying around the corner. If you climb this mountain, it is better to wear ankle covering hiking boots.
