毛原の棚田　Kehara Terraced Rice Fields

Leaving Ama-no-Iwato Shrine behind, I started pedaling slowly toward the beautiful Kehara Terraced Rice Fields.

天岩戸神社をあとにして、自転車をこぎ出し、のんびりと景色の美しい毛原の棚田へ向かいました。

I visited here once in autumn — 12 years ago! But this was my first time seeing the fields in spring. Click here to read my story from 12 years ago.
To be honest, I was a little worried the fields might have been abandoned, with so many farmers aging and fewer people to tend them. But I was delighted to see the shimmering reflections of water still filling the terraced rice fields — such a timeless sight.

正直なところ、高齢化の影響で棚田がもう使われていないのでは…と少し心配していました。けれど、水が張られた棚田に映るきらめく光景を見てとても嬉しくなりました。今もなお息づく、昔ながらの美しさでした。

A geometer moth with leopard-like spots. During its larval stage, it accumulates toxins from its host plants and retains these toxins even as an adult, making it unpalatable to birds and other predators.
ヒョウモンエダシャク（シャクガ科）。幼虫の時に食べた植物の毒を体内に蓄え、大人になってもその毒を保持するため、鳥などの天敵に嫌われます。

​I came across this steep slope on the ridge. There was a sign that said “Lookout 5 minutes down the trail,” so I thought, “Sweet, let’s check it out!” But nope — when I got there, the trees completely blocked the view. What a letdown. While I was standing there, a little deer suddenly darted right in front of me, and I could hear others calling to each other somewhere deeper in the forest. After that, I had to haul myself back up that steep slope. It was tough work for zero payoff, and by the time I got back, I was completely knackered!

尾根の急な坂を見つけました。トレイルの標識には「展望台まで徒歩5分」って書いてあったから、「よし、行ってみよう！」と思ったんですが……着いたら木がじゃまで全く景色が見えませんでした。がっかり！そこに小さな鹿が目の前を走り抜けて、森の奥からは仲間同士が呼び合う声が聞こえてきました。そのあと、あの急な坂をまた登り返す羽目に。頑張って登ったのに報われず、戻った時にはもうクタクタでした！

I decided to keep on following the path uphill, hoping to find the lookout I’d spotted earlier from the rice fields. Sure enough — just two minutes up the track, there it was! I was treated to a bird’s-eye view of the Kehara Terraced Rice Fields. And as a bonus, I got a splendid view of Mt.Iwato rising in the background.

​道はまだ上へと続いていたので、このまま進めばさっき棚田から見つけた展望所に行けるかも…と期待しながらペダルをこぎ続けました。すると、ほんの２分ほど登ったところで展望所に到着！
毛原の棚田を見下ろす鳥の目線のような素敵な景色が広がっていました。そしておまけに、背景に岩戸山の姿が映えて、とても印象的な光景でした。

The lookout　お目当ての展望台

A tiny burst of color among the grass. When the sun shines, the little blue-eyed grass says ‘Hello!’ and opens its petals. By evening, it quietly closes again, as if saying ‘See you tomorrow.’ But for each little flower, tomorrow never comes.
芝生の中に小さな彩り。ニワゼキショウは日が差すと「こんにちは」と花を開き、夕方になると「また明日ね」と閉じてしまいます。でも、同じ花には明日はもう来ないんです。

"Whoa!!! That’s the biggest cage trap I’ve ever seen. You could throw a wild boar family reunion in there — and still have room for a few deer and maybe even a bear or two! The bait (which smelled rather unappetizing) was placed right in the center. A trip wire runs just above the ground along the front edge of the bait — one wrong step and... slam!"

​うわっ！！！こんなに大きな箱わな、今まで見たことない！イノシシの家族会でも開けそうだし、シカが数頭、クマもひょっとしたら数匹は余裕で入るかも！？真ん中には、ちょっと食欲をそそらないニオイのエサが置いてありました。エサの前には地面ギリギリにワイヤーが張られていて、そこに足をかけたら…バタンッ！って閉まる仕掛けです。

To reach the lookout, you need to pass through this gate. Be sure to close it behind you! And don’t forget to check how it’s locked, so you can lock it properly when leaving. After all, we don’t want any wild animals sneaking out and munching on the precious rice plants!

​展望台へ行くには、このゲートを通らないといけません。通ったら、ちゃんと閉めておきましょう！
入るときに鍵のかけ方をチェックしておきましょう。帰るときにちゃんと元通りに鍵をかけられるように！
だって、大事な棚田の稲を獣たちにむしゃむしゃ食べられたら困りますからね！

Actually, there is another path into the mountains at the same spot. This path goes to Kehara Pass. There you can find the Kesagiri Jizō. I went all the way over this path to Karakawa 12 years ago. ​実は、同じ場所からもう一本、山へと続く道があります。この道は毛原峠へと通じており、そこには袈裟切り地蔵が祀られています。私は12年前にこの道を越えて辛皮まで行ったことがあります。そのときの記録はこちらをクリック。

I spotted a pair of Japanese fire-bellied newts hanging out in a roadside drain. So far, I’ve only ever seen two newts over the years — suddenly, that's doubled to four. The lighter-colored one with the red showing is probably the male, and the other is likely the female. They each popped up once for air, which you can see in the video below.
Toward the end of the video, you can also hear a warbler followed by a Japanese paradise flycatcher singing away. 「hoh-hokekyo」「tsuki-hi-hoshi hoi-hoi-hoi」 Their peaceful songs made it such a relaxing spot that I could have stayed there for hours. Actually, I first saw a Japanese paradise flycatcher seven years ago. It was a special encounter, and I managed to take some beautiful photos of it. For that story and photo, click on this link. But this time, hunger won out, so I headed back to my car.

​道ばたの溝でニホンイモリのペアを見つけました。これまで何年もかけて見たイモリはたった2匹だけだったのに、突然その数が4匹に倍増です。赤い色が見えている薄い色の方がオスで、もう一匹がメスだと思います。２匹とも一度ずつ空気を吸いに顔を出してくれて、その様子は下の動画で見られます。
動画の終わりごろには、ウグイスと続いてサンコウチョウのさえずりも聞こえます。「ホーホケキョ」「ツキヒホシホイホイホイ」彼らののびやかなさえずりに包まれて、とてもリラックスできる場所でした。実は、サンコウチョウを初めて見たのは7年前でした。とても印象的な出会いで、きれいな写真も撮ることができました。その時の話と写真は、こちらをご覧ください。でも今回はお腹がすいてきたので、車に戻ることにしました
