関ケ原 Sekigahara
I arrived in Sekigahara just after dark. The gasoline here was much cheaper than around where I live. There were swarms of insects around the gas station's lights. While filling up my car I felt an insect land on my head. As soon as I brushed it away, I smelt that dreaded stink bug smell emanating from my head. Noooooo! You gotta be kidding me! Sporting my new perfume, I went to find a place to park up for the night.

I ended up parking up at the large free car park at Mt. Sasao, where Mitsunari Ishida's encampment was. I thought Sekigahara would be a city, but it is only a town. But it has the Tokaido Shinkansen, the JR Tokaido Main Line, the Meishin Expressway and National Route 21 passing through it, so it is rather noisy near these vital arteries. However, the Mt. Sasao car park is on the other side of town, so it was nice and quiet. I was able to have a nice uninterrupted deep sleep. I woke up just before first light to the sound of 'kerr-kok, kerr-kok'. "What the heck is that!?", I wondered. I got up at dawn and got ready to explore Sekigahara.

The sight that greeted me upon exiting the car was like a glimpse into the past: Ishida Mitsunari's banners and the intimidating palisades of his encampment were impressive. My excitement to finally be able to explore Sekigahara increased ten-fold.

It's a very short walk up to Mitsunari Ishida's encampment on Mt. Sasao. It takes only a few minutes. The palisades immediately piqued my curiosity making this the perfect place to start for me.

I usually see 'Beware of Bears' signs, not 'Beware of Monkeys' signs. Maybe this is my first 'monkey' sign. This sign says, "If you see monkeys, please do not feed them or provoke them by making noise or throwing objects. Remain calm, avoid eye contact, and slowly move to a safe location.

From here, I rode around a 12km course visiting the sites of the military leaders' encampments and reading a little about them at each site. I could also visualize the layout of the land. I have included part of the information board of each leader that I visited and their clan emblem. The QR code contains the information written on the boards in 6 languages. Sekigahara is a very visitor friendly place. There are clean toilets at different locations, plenty of signage and free parking. You can see a pdf map of the cycling course at the bottom of this page.

Sekigahara Mt. Sasao Information Center. During my trip, I often saw the word 'close' hanging in doorways during out-of-hours. It's as if they were taunting me saying, 'So close yet so far. Sorry you can't enter'. Joking apart, of course the sign should say 'closed'.

I mentioned that I woke to the sound of 'kerr-kok, kerr-kok'. I was surprised and delighted to see pheasants in the fields. In this photo, you can see an impressive-looking male cock pheasant and his plain-looking hen.

Kobayakawa Hideaki's Encampment 小早川秀秋陣跡
Kobayakawa Hideaki's last-minute defection from the Western Army to the Eastern Army significantly shifted the balance of power and contributed to the Western Army's defeat at Sekigahara. However, two years later, Kobayakawa drank himself to death, reportedly driven mad. With no heir to succeed him, the Kobayakawa clan dissolved, and their territories were taken over by the neighboring Ikeda clan.

I would have liked to visit here. But it opened at 10 a.m. and I had left Sekigahara before it opened. Maybe I'll visit here another day and also do a longer ride and/or climb some of the mountains.

I was especially interested in Hosokawa Tadaoki since he was lord of Miyazu Castle leading up to the Battle of Sekigahara and also since his wife was the legendary Hosokawa Gracia. As you can see in the QR code below, Tadaoki had good reason to hate Ishida Mitsunari.

Just as I'd finished loading my bike into my car, this guy decked out in samurai armor and weapons showed up and posed for photos in front of Ishida Mitsunari's Encampment.

I enjoyed riding around Sekigahara, learning more about the place and people involved. And that brings a very enjoyable trip to an end.
