天岩戸神社 Amanoiwato Shrine
Recently I found out about Ama-no-Iwato Shrine and had been waiting for a nice day to go check it out. It’s less than a 30-minute drive from Miyazu, so it’s an easy day trip. I decided to drive to the area near the Japan Oni Cultural Museum, park there, and explore the rest of the way by bike. The weather was perfect — a great start to my little adventure. I love finding hidden spots like this, and this one did not disappoint.

I started my adventure at the The monument to the legend of Shuten Dōji.
Long ago, during the Heian period, the capital of Kyoto was plagued by the demon Shuten Dōji, who led a band of oni (demons) from his stronghold on Mt. Ōe. Shuten Dōji and his followers would descend from the mountain to kidnap and devour young women, spreading fear throughout the land.
The emperor ordered Minamoto no Raikō (also known as Minamoto no Yorimitsu) to defeat the demon. Raikō gathered his trusted warriors—the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitennō): Usui Sadamitsu, Urabe no Suetake, Sakata no Kintoki, and Watanabe no Tsuna. Disguised as yamabushi (mountain ascetics), the group ascended Mt. Ōe.
With the help of deities and a magical sake (said to be poisoned or enchanted), they managed to weaken Shuten Dōji. After a fierce battle, they beheaded the demon. However, even after its head was severed, it attempted to bite Raikō—showing the demon’s terrifying strength to the end.
Victorious, Raikō and his warriors returned to Kyoto with the demon’s head as proof of their triumph.

The term Moto-Ise Sansa (Three Moto-Ise Shrines) refers collectively to Amano-Iwato Shrine, Moto-Ise Inner Shrine Kōtai Jinja, and Moto-Ise Outer Shrine Toyouke Daijinja.
Amano-Iwato Shrine is located in the Iwato Gorge, a site well-suited to be the place where the gods are said to have descended. In this mystical setting, the main hall and the Goza-ishi (Seat Stone), where the gods are said to have once sat, are enshrined.

Looking down river 川下を望む
The sacred area of Ama-no-Iwato Shrine extends along both banks of the Futase River. The left bank connects to Kōtai Shrine, while the right bank is formed by Mt. Iwato, which rises to an elevation of 427.3 meters. From the worship area along the approach to Kōtai Shrine, you can view the beautiful, pyramid-shaped eastern slope of Mt. Iwato. Because this eastern slope has long been protected as the sacred object of worship for Ama-no-Iwato Shrine, it retains a nearly pristine, natural forest. As such, it holds great scientific value for understanding the native vegetation of the region.
天岩戸神社の神域は二瀬川の両岸に広がり、左岸は皇大神社にあまのいわ と じん じゃふた せ がわこうたい じん じゃ連続し、右岸は標高427.3mの岩戸山となっています。皇大神社参いわ と やま道の遙拝所からは、この岩戸山東側斜面の美しいピラミッド形の山の姿をながめることができます。この東側斜面は、天岩戸神社の御神体として古くから保護されてきたことから、ほぼ原生状態に近い植生が残されており、この地域の植生を知る上で極めて学術的価値の高い自然林となっています。
Amanoiwato Shrine 天岩戸神社
Amano-Iwato Shrine is one of the three Moto-Ise shrines of Ōe Town — Kōtai Jinja (Inner Shrine), Toyouke Daijinja (Outer Shrine), and Amano-Iwato Shrine. It has long been revered as the former site of the Ise Grand Shrine and as a symbolic presence in this region.
The deities enshrined at Amano-Iwato Shrine, Kushi Iwamado no Mikoto and Toyoiwamado no Mikoto, are gods of the sacred rocks that guard the gates. The mystical rocky site of the Iwato Gorge is identified with the Amano-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave), and it is said that the gatekeeper deities from the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) are also enshrined here.

天岩戸神社は大江町の元伊勢三社〔皇大神社(内宮)·豊受大神あまのいわ と じんじゃこうたいじんじゃ ないとようけ だい じん社(外宮)·天岩戸神社〕の一つで、伊勢の皇大神宮の元宮として、じゃけ古くからこの地方の象徴的存在として崇敬されてきました。天岩戸神社の祭神である櫛岩窓戸命·豊岩窓戸命は門を守る岩石の神じいおまどのみととよいわ まどの、みことおおみかみであり、岩戸溪石の幽玄の地を天岩戸に比定し、古事記の大神の門番神を配祀していると伝えられています。
Goza-ishi (seat stone) 御座石
The large rock behind the shrine building is said to be the place where the gods descended and sat, and it is called the Goza-ishi (Seat Stone).In addition, across the Iwato Gorge from the Goza-ishi, there is a stone known as the Kagura-ishi (Sacred Dance Stone).Further downstream, about 50 meters away on the rocky riverbed, there is a pothole (a hole formed in the bedrock by river erosion), which is called Ubuyarai (Birthing Basin), as it is said to be the place where the gods once bathed.It is believed that defiling this Ubuyarai will bring about misfortune or unusual phenomena. The water in the Ubuyarai never runs dry, even on the hottest mornings, and it is said that pouring this water onto the river's surface will bring rain.
社殿背面にある巨石は、神が座して天降った所といわれ『御座石』と名付けられています。また、御座石がら岩戸溪谷をへだてた下手には『神楽石』と呼ばれる石があります。さらに約50m下流の岩場には盛穴(河流の浸食作用によって川底の岩盤にあいた穴)があり、この甌穴は神が湯浴みしたところとして『産盥』と呼ばれています。これを汚すと変異を現すといい伝えられており、産盥の水は早天にも涸れることなく、この水を水面に注げば蒸雨を呼ぶとされています。
Iwagiriso blooming on the rocky cliffs of the gorge. This rare perennial plant grows only on moist, shaded rock faces. It is known for its charming purplish-pink flowers and leaves that resemble those of the paulownia tree. In the past, it was highly prized as a wildflower, but due to over-collection its natural habitats have declined, and today it is a species in need of protection.
渓谷の岩壁に咲くイワギリソウ。湿った日陰の岩場だけに生える珍しい多年草で、紅紫色の可愛らしい花と、桐の葉に似た葉が特徴です。過去には山野草として人気が高く、採取が進んだことで自生地は少なくなり、現在では保護が呼びかけられています。
