森に秋が訪れる頃、「色主（イロヌシ）」と呼ばれるいたずら好きな妖怪たちが、燃えるようなカエデの色彩を貪り始めました。彼らの暴挙を止め、森の秋の輝きを取り戻せるのは、滝を司る古の守護神たちだけ。これは、水の龍「ミズチ」と、風を操る「クマさん」、そして色を追い求める謎めいた精霊たちが織りなす、短い物語です。」

"Imagine a world where the brilliant reds, oranges, and golds of the mountains simply vanish. Inspired by the mossy cliffs of Ryusou-ga-taki Falls in Fukui, I’ve written a story titled 'The Guardians of the Emerald Fall.' As autumn settles over the forest, a group of mischievous, color-gobbling yokai known as the Iro-Nushi have begun to devour the fiery hues of the maple trees. Only the ancient guardians of the waterfall can stop them and restore the forest’s autumn glory. This is a short tale about the water dragon Mizuchi, a bear called Kuma-san who can control the wind, and the mysterious spirits who hunt for color."

If Ichijodani Had Endured

The Stone Wall of Tonezaka

The retreat from the south had already begun when the rain came.

It fell without pause, turning mountain roads into streams and valleys into traps of mud and stone. Armor grew heavy as silk cords soaked through. Banners sagged. Men slipped as they marched. Behind them, Oda Nobunaga pressed forward with relentless speed, driving his army hard despite the weather. He meant to finish the Asakura not with a single blow, but by pursuit—by denying them rest, order, and dignity.

The road narrowed at Tonezaka Pass.

Here, the mountains closed in, steep and unforgiving. Rainwater rushed down the slopes, carrying loose earth and broken branches with it. The pass had always been dangerous. Now it was barely passable.

Asakura Yoshikage’s forces could not outrun the pursuit. They could only slow it.

Asakura Kagetake understood this before the order was given.

He rode ahead to the narrowest point of the pass, dismounted, and looked back down the road where the remnants of the Asakura army struggled through rain and mud. If the Oda vanguard broke through here, there would be no second line. Ichijodani would fall.

Kagetake returned to Yoshikage as the rain soaked through his armor.

“Leave the pass to me,” he said.

Yoshikage protested. Others joined him. This was not a battle that could be won. The enemy was too strong, too close. But Kagetake did not argue. He only repeated himself.

“If the road is held, the army lives. If it breaks, Ichijodani dies.”

He was given fewer than a thousand men—veterans, rear guards, those already wounded enough to know they would not survive another flight. There were arquebuses among them, but the rain rendered them nearly useless. Powder clumped. Fuses failed. The same rain blunted even Nobunaga’s feared teppō-gumi, whose firearms were reduced to dead weight in the downpour.

This would not be a fight of fire and smoke.

It would be a fight of bodies and stone.

Trees were felled across the road. Rocks were loosened and left waiting above the path. Spears were planted where the road narrowed to a single line. The rain did the rest, washing mud and debris down into the pass until movement itself became an effort.

When Nobunaga’s men arrived, they came fast—too fast.

They expected a broken enemy. Instead, they found the road closed.

The first clashes were brutal and close. No formations. No volleys. Men fought at arm’s length, slipping, falling, dragging one another into the mud. The Asakura did not advance. They did not pursue. They simply refused to give way.

Logs crashed down from above. Stones broke armor and bone alike. Men died without ever seeing who had struck them.

The rain fell harder.

Nobunaga ordered repeated assaults. Each gained a few steps. Each was pushed back. The pass swallowed time as one precious hour bled into the next. Men and pack animals crowded the mountain road behind the front, progress choked by mud, wounded bodies, and fallen gear. The dead could not be cleared.

All the while, the Asakura army escaped northward, slipping into familiar valley paths that led home.

By the second day, the resistance thinned. One by one, the Asakura defenders fell. Asakura Kagetake was seen last near the center of the pass, fighting on foot, his armor dark with rain and blood. When the road was finally taken, all that remained was his golden quince banner, torn but still planted firmly in the earth; of the man himself, there was no trace.

But the army was gone.

Nobunaga crossed Tonezaka and halted.

The road ahead no longer promised a swift end. The delay had cost him men, momentum, and certainty. Reports arrived of shifting loyalties, of neighboring houses watching closely, weighing the cost of further pursuit. Victory, once assured, now demanded time he could not easily spare.

He turned his army south.

Ichijodani endured—not by chance, but by resolve sharpened by fear.

The Asakura did not mistake survival for safety. Walls were strengthened. Roads were watched. More importantly, hands were extended. Marriages were arranged with care. Agreements were made quietly, not as declarations of power, but as acknowledgments of balance. Ichijodani became a place others preferred to deal with rather than challenge.

War was held at a distance.

Within that space, the valley prospered. Ichijodani became known for its schools, its temples, and the quality of the work done by its craftsmen. Learning was valued. Religion was supported. Skill was cultivated not for display, but for use. The city did not chase renown; it earned trust.

Ichijodani remembered Tonezaka not as a victory, but as a lesson.

They spoke Asakura Kagetake’s name not in mourning, but in gratitude. He was not remembered for how he died, but for the stand he chose to make—and for what that choice preserved.

And so Ichijodani endured--
not because it conquered,
but because, when the moment demanded it,
one man became a wall.

刀根坂の石の壁

南からの退却が始まって間もなく、雨が降り出した。

止むことのない雨は、山道を川に変え、谷を泥と石の罠に変えた。濡れた絹紐が甲冑に水を含ませ、鎧は重くなる。旗は垂れ下がり、兵は足を取られながら進んだ。その背後から、織田信長は容赦なく追撃を続けていた。天候など意に介さず、軍を急がせる。朝倉を一気に討つのではない。追い詰め、休ませず、隊列を崩し、誇りごと削り取る――それが信長の狙いだった。

道は刀根坂で急激に狭まる。

険しい山々が迫り、逃げ場はない。雨水は斜面を流れ落ち、土砂や折れ枝を巻き込みながら道を覆った。もともと難所として知られた峠は、この日、ほとんど通行不能となっていた。

朝倉義景の軍に、もはや逃げ切る余地はなかった。できるのは、追撃を遅らせることだけだった。

命が下る前から、そのことを悟っていた者がいる。
朝倉景健である。

彼は馬を走らせ、峠の最も狭い地点で下馬した。そして振り返り、雨と泥の中でもがく味方の列を見下ろした。ここを破られれば、次はない。一乗谷は陥ちる。

鎧を濡らしながら義景のもとに戻り、景健は言った。

「この坂は、私にお任せください」

義景は止めた。周囲も声を上げた。勝ち目のある戦ではない。敵は強く、近すぎる。だが景健は言い返さなかった。ただ、同じ言葉を繰り返した。

「道を守れれば、軍は生きます。破られれば、一乗谷は死にます」

与えられた兵は千に満たなかった。歴戦の兵、殿軍、すでに深手を負い、これ以上の逃走に耐えられぬ者たち。鉄砲もあったが、雨がすべてを無力にした。火薬は湿り、導火線は燃えない。その雨は、信長が誇る鉄砲衆でさえ、ただの重荷に変えていた。

これは火と煙の戦ではない。

肉体と石の戦いだった。

木は道に倒され、岩は斜面に仕掛けられた。道幅が一人分に絞られる地点には槍が並ぶ。あとは雨がすべてを整えた。泥と瓦礫が流れ込み、進むこと自体が苦行となる。

信長の先鋒は、速すぎるほどの勢いで現れた。

敗走する敵を想定していた彼らの前にあったのは、閉ざされた道だった。

戦いは凄惨だった。陣形もなく、斉射もない。腕の届く距離で斬り合い、滑り、倒れ、互いを泥の中に引きずり込む。朝倉方は前に出ない。追わない。ただ、一歩も譲らなかった。

上から丸太が落ち、岩が鎧と骨を砕く。誰に斬られたのかも分からぬまま、兵は倒れていった。

雨はいよいよ激しさを増す。

信長は幾度も突撃を命じた。進んでは押し返され、進んでは止まる。刀根坂は時間を飲み込んだ。刻一刻が失われていく。後方では兵と荷駄が道を塞ぎ、泥、負傷者、落とされた装備が行軍を詰まらせる。死者を片づける余裕すらなかった。

その間にも、朝倉の本隊は北へと抜けていく。よく知る谷筋をたどり、帰るべき地へと消えていった。

二日目、守りは次第に薄れていった。朝倉の兵は一人、また一人と倒れる。景健が最期の姿が目撃されたのは、峠の中央だった。徒歩で戦い、鎧は雨と血に黒ずんでいたという。道がついに開かれたとき、そこに残っていたのは、引き裂かれながらも地に立つ木瓜の旗だけだった。景健の姿は、どこにもなかった。

だが、軍は逃れた。

信長は刀根坂を越え、そこで軍を止めた。

この先に、容易な決着はない。遅れは兵力と勢い、そして確信を削っていた。周辺諸家の動きも報せられる。さらなる追撃がもたらす代償は、もはや小さくない。

信長は軍を南へ返した。

一乗谷は、偶然ではなく、恐怖によって研ぎ澄まされた決意によって生き残った。

朝倉は生存を安全と取り違えなかった。城は固められ、道は見張られた。だがそれ以上に、手が差し出された。婚姻が結ばれ、取り決めが静かに交わされた。力を誇るのではなく、均衡を保つための関係だった。一乗谷は、攻めるよりも付き合う方が得な場所となっていった。

戦は、距離を保たれた。

その空白の中で、谷は栄えた。一乗谷は学問と信仰、そして確かな技を持つ職人の地として知られるようになる。知は尊ばれ、寺は支えられ、技は見せるためではなく、使うために磨かれた。名声を追わず、信頼を積み重ねた。

一乗谷は、刀根坂を勝利とは呼ばなかった。
教訓として記憶した。

朝倉景健の名は、嘆きではなく感謝とともに語られた。一乗谷の「礎」として語り継がれた。
彼は、どのように死んだかではなく、どこで踏みとどまったかによって記憶された。そして、その選択が守り残したものによって。

こうして一乗谷は耐え抜いた。
征服したからではない。
その時、必要とされた場所で、
一人の男が壁となったからである。

Roadside Station Ichijōdani Asakura Mizu-no-Eki

I stopped at Ichijodani Restaurant for lunch before heading out of the valley to the road station. I wanted to try another famous Fukui dish, Echizen oroshi soba. I had heard that these buckwheat noodles were topped with a generous dollop of spicy grated daikon radish.
To my surprise, when my order arrived, I couldn’t see any radish at all. There were only bonito flakes and green onions on top. The noodles tasted good, but once again I left feeling disappointed, as if I hadn’t tried the real thing. I’m used to dipping the noodles into the soup (tsuyu), but here the soup is poured directly over the noodles.

谷を後にして道の駅へ向かう前に、一乗谷レストランで昼食をとりました。福井の名物のひとつ、「越前おろしそば」を食べてみたかったからです。ピリッと辛い大根おろしがたっぷりのったそばだと聞いていました。
ところが、運ばれてきたそばを見て驚きました。大根おろしが見当たらず、上にのっていたのは鰹節とねぎだけでした。そば自体は美味しかったのですが、どこか本場のものを食べられなかったような、少し残念な気持ちで店を後にしました。
私はそばをつゆにつけて食べるスタイルに慣れていますが、ここではつゆをそばに直接かける食べ方でした。

This uniquely designed weir is the modern Asuwa River Headworks (Ashiwagawa Tōshukō). It regulates water flow for the surrounding farmland. The upstream pool was a beautiful color, reflecting the mountains and the weir itself, which made it especially photogenic. The sign below explains its history.

この特徴的なデザインの堰は、現在の足羽川頭首工です。周辺の農地へ水を供給・調整する役割を担っています。上流側の水面は山々や堰を映し出し、美しい色合いでとても写真映えしていました。下の案内板では、その歴史が紹介されています。

Pillars of the Former Asuwa River Headworks Weir
The history of the Asuwa River headworks dates back to the Genroku era, when Toda Yajibei Hidefusa, the irrigation magistrate of the Fukui Domain, constructed a wooden sunken-bed weir (commonly known as the Gohon-jō) at the intake of the Tokumitsu Irrigation Canal between 1692 and 1698. This structure became the origin of the present weir.
Over the years, the weir suffered repeated damage from major floods and underwent numerous large-scale repairs. However, in June 1948, the Great Fukui Earthquake caused catastrophic destruction to the weir and related irrigation facilities. Despite the enormous effort and expense invested in restoration, disputes over water use continued.
To address these problems, the Asuwa River Headworks was newly constructed in 1963 as part of the Fukui Prefectural Asuwa River Irrigation and Drainage Project.
For the 46 years that followed, the facility supplied water to 3,078 hectares of rice paddies (as of 1963), supporting agricultural development while also providing a stable supply of agricultural and domestic water for the local community. It has long been a familiar and valued presence for area residents.
Here, a portion of the weir pillars from the former Asuwa River Headworks, which once stood as a symbol of local history and agriculture, has been preserved.

Ashiwa River Irrigation System (World Heritage of Irrigation)
The map shown here illustrates the Ashiwa River Irrigation System, a network of canals that takes water from the Ashiwa River weir in southeastern Fukui City and delivers it across a wide farming area. This system irrigates around 2,000 hectares of farmland through seven main canals, with a total length of about 74 kilometers.
The Ashiwa River Irrigation System is not only important for agriculture, but also highly valued as a community water resource. In recognition of its historical and technical significance, it was selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Irrigation Canals” and later registered as a World Heritage of Irrigation by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID).
Its origins date back to the Edo period. In 1688, a wooden-sunk weir and major improvements to the main canal made it possible to expand rice cultivation and greatly increase the irrigated area. Remarkably, many of the system’s basic design standards have remained unchanged for more than 300 years, showing the high level of engineering skill at the time.
Even today, the canals are maintained by local residents and used not only for farming, but also for environmental education, landscape preservation, and community activities. These ongoing efforts highlight how this historic irrigation system continues to support both daily life and local culture in the region.

足羽川用水（世界かんがい施設遺産）
この地図は、福井市南東部にある足羽川頭首工から取水し、広大な農地へ水を供給する「足羽川用水」の位置と流れを示したものです。足羽川用水は、約2,000ヘクタールの農地をかんがいする用水路の総称で、7つの用水、総延長約73.7kmから構成されています。
足羽川用水は農業用水としてだけでなく、地域用水としても高く評価されており、平成18年には「疏水百選」に選定され、第8回日本水大賞も受賞しています。さらに、その歴史的・技術的価値が認められ、国際かんがい排水委員会（ICID）により「世界かんがい施設遺産」に登録されました。
その起源は江戸時代にさかのぼります。1688年には、木工沈床による堰堤の建設と幹線水路の大改修が行われ、水稲栽培の拡大と、かんがい面積の大幅な増加が実現しました。また、「合口」のための堰堤構造や分水地点の「定石」など、当時としては先進的な技術が用いられ、用水の基本的な基準が300年以上にわたり受け継がれている点も特筆されます。
現在も、地域住民による補修・改修・維持管理が続けられ、景観保全やビオトープ整備、環境学習など、地域用水として幅広く活用されています。こうした取り組みは、地域の活性化や住民同士の交流にも大きく貢献しています。

Triple Water Wheels
The triple water wheels lift water from a lower level to a higher one using both water power and electricity, drawing water from the Asuwa River Headworks, a facility on the Asuwa River that diverts water to nearby rice paddies.
The lifted water is used to support the biotope ecosystem and hands-on farming areas.
Three connected water wheels, each measuring 3.6 to 4.4 meters in diameter, rotate in sequence, scooping up water as they turn to supply water to the park’s waterways throughout the year.
In addition, the milling hut is equipped with grinding stones and a pounding mortar, allowing rice, buckwheat, and other grains to be processed using the power of the water wheels.

How Hydroelectric Power Generates Electricity
Hydroelectric power generates electricity by using the force of water flowing from a higher level to a lower level to turn a water wheel. The rotating water wheel drives a connected generator, which produces electricity.
At Ichijodani Asakura Mizu-no-Eki, electricity is generated by Water Wheel C, which can be seen through the window on the left. First, Water Wheels A and B scoop up water from the Asuwa River irrigation channel (Figure 1). The lifted water then flows downward, and its force turns Water Wheel C (Figure 2). The rotation of the water wheel drives a generator (Figure 3), producing electricity.
In addition, the rotational power of the water wheel can be used to operate millstones and grind grain.
Hydropower, along with wind, solar, and geothermal energy, is known as a renewable energy source. Because it does not emit carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming, it is expected to play an important role as an environmentally friendly, clean energy source.

This is the biotope area at Roadside Station Ichijōdani Asakura Mizu-no-Eki.

Biotope
A biotope is a place where living things (bio) live naturally (tope). It refers to an environment where a wide variety of plants and animals live without being fed by people.
Familiar examples of biotopes include grassy areas, forests, ponds, rivers, and rice paddies.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the living things around us.

The Lifecycle of Genji Fireflies.

When they become adults, male Genji fireflies fly around near rivers, find a female, and mate. After that, the female lays her eggs.
The eggs are laid on moss and similar plants along the riverbank.
The larvae live in the river, in areas where the water flows gently and the riverbed is covered with small stones and gravel.
When it is time to become a pupa, the larva leaves the river and moves onto land. It digs into the soil and makes a small chamber. This chamber is called an earthen cocoon.

Four Biotope Conditions Fireflies Need to Survive
1. Moss must be present where eggs are laid.
2. There must be soil where pupae can build their earthen cocoons.
3. There must be places to rest (trees and grasses) and varied waterways.
4. There must be aquatic plants that support kawanina snails, the firefly larvae’s food source.

In the satellite photo above, you can clearly see how the Ichijodani valley is surrounded by mountains, creating a natural fortress.

And that brought a very enjoyable weekend in Fukui Prefecture to an end. From Ichijōdani Asakura Mizu-no-Eki, I headed for the highway and the drive back home. My impression of Fukui changed — there is far more to see and do than I had expected.

A few minutes drive up the valley from the Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Family Museum, I visited the Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins, The following was written on a sign at the entrance.

The Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins are ruins of the castle town ruled by the Asakura family daimyos (warring lord) over 103 years and 5 generations in the Warring States period more than 500 years ago. In its heyday, Ichijodani was a large city, just smaller than Kyoto and Sakai in Osaka with a population in excess of 10,000 people. It gave rise to an elegant culture. However, in 1573 Oda Nobunaga set the Asakura family grounds ablaze over three days and three nights, bringing its long history to a close. Site excavation began in earnest in 1967. The Asakura residence, samurai-era housing and townscape have been excavated in almost perfect condition, making it the only ruins of its kind in Japan. These ruins are greatly treasured by Japan, receiving three national designations as a special historic site, a special place of scenic beauty and an important cultural property. There are only four other sites in Japan, including Kyoto' s Kinkakuji, which have received this level of honor.

福井県立一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡博物館から谷あいを車で数分進んだところにある、一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡を訪れた。入口に設置されていた案内板には、次の内容が記されていた。

一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡は、今から約500余年前、戦国大名·朝倉氏が5代103年間にわたって支配した城下町跡。最盛期には、人口1万人を超え、京都·大阪堺に続く大都市であり、雅やかな文化の華を咲かせました。しかし、朝倉氏は、天正元年(1573)に信長より三日三晩、焼き打ちに遭い、その長い歴史の幕を閉じました。昭和42年から始まった本格的な発掘調査で、当主の館や武家屋敷、町並みがほぼ完全な姿で発掘された日本唯一の遺跡です。この遺跡は全国的にも大変貴重で、国の特別史跡、特別名勝、重要文化財と3つの指定を受けており、他には金閣寺など4例しかありません。

You can enter the Ichijodani Restored Townscape from either end; I entered from the north. Admission costs 330 yen. The roughly 200-meter-long street is lined with high earthen walls, and visitors can explore various remains and reconstructed buildings along the way. On the west side (right) are the sites of large samurai residences; passing through their gates leads into open areas where the boundaries of the former compounds can be seen, but no buildings remain. On the east side (left), medium-sized samurai residences and townhouses have been reconstructed, allowing visitors to step inside and get a glimpse of daily life during the Sengoku period. All reconstructed buildings are based on archaeological evidence uncovered at the site.

一乗谷復原町並は両端のどちらからでも入ることができ、私は北側から入場した。入場料は330円。全長約200メートルの通りには高い土塁が続き、その途中でさまざまな遺構や復原建物を見学することができる。
西側（右側）には大規模な武家屋敷跡があり、門をくぐると建物のない開けた空間が広がり、当時の敷地の区画を確認することができる。一方、東側（左側）には中規模の武家屋敷や町家が復原されており、内部に入って戦国時代の人々の暮らしぶりを垣間見ることができる。これらの建物は、遺跡から発見された考古学的資料をもとに復原されたものである。

This exhibition space features Japanese umbrellas. In the autumn display, lengths of fabric hang from a large wooden frame and gently move in the wind, while colorful Japanese umbrellas are arranged at the far end.

この展示スペースでは和傘が展示されている。秋の展示では、大きな木製の枠から布が垂れ下がり、風に揺れる中、奥には色とりどりの和傘が配置されている。

This photo was taken inside a medium-sized samurai residence. This room appears to be the kitchen, where a man is shown cutting up a fish. In the rooms to the left, there were two sets of samurai armor, a set of swords, and two men playing shogi.
In the center of the kitchen is a large sunken hearth called an irori. When I see a room like this, I always wonder where the smoke went, given that there was no chimney, and how it affected people’s health. The room would have been smoky to a certain extent, but most of the smoke accumulated in the upper part of the room, forming a visible layer of haze that slowly seeped out through the roof. This had the added benefit of acting as a natural insecticide and preservative, helping to kill wood-boring insects and prevent rot.
As for the impact on health, prolonged exposure often led to eye irritation and respiratory problems. The term “irori eyes” was used to describe the red, watery eyes caused by constant exposure to smoke.

この写真は中規模の武家屋敷の内部で撮影したものである。この部屋は台所と思われ、魚をさばいている男性の様子が再現されている。左手の部屋には、甲冑が二組と刀一式、そして将棋を指している二人の男性の姿があった。
台所の中央には、囲炉裏と呼ばれる大きな掘り込み式の炉が設けられている。このような部屋を見るたびに、煙突のない空間で煙はどこへ行ったのか、また人々の健康にどのような影響があったのかと考えてしまう。室内はある程度煙に包まれていたと考えられるが、煙の多くは天井付近にたまり、もやの層を形成しながら、ゆっくりと屋根の隙間から外へ抜けていった。この煙には、木材を食害する虫を防ぎ、腐朽を抑えるという、防虫・保存の効果もあった。
一方で、健康への影響も無視できず、長期間煙にさらされることで、目の刺激や呼吸器系の不調を引き起こすことがあった。煙の影響で目が赤くなり涙が出る状態は、「囲炉裏目（いろりめ）」と呼ばれていた。

This beautiful lone maple tree stands within one of the large samurai residences. Beside it is a small stage known as the Yumebutai (Dream Stage). Apparently, visitors or local residents can use this space for musical performances or small recitals. In the photo, the boundaries of the residence can also be seen, clearly marked by larger rocks.

この美しい一本紅葉は、大規模な武家屋敷の敷地内に立っている。そばには「夢舞台（ゆめぶたい）」と呼ばれる小さな舞台がある。どうやら、来訪者や地元の人々が音楽演奏や小規模な催しを行うために使われることがあるようだ。写真では、屋敷の境界が大きな石によって明確に示されている様子も確認できる。

In the photo above, you can see several women dressed in Sengoku-period attire. They were selling green tea for 100 yen. The green tea came with a sweet, as shown in the photo below. It was the first time I had come across this type of sweet, so I asked one of the women what it was. She said it was called kenkera, and then went on to recite a short ditty about it. It was amusing, but I couldn’t remember exactly what she said, so I created my own version, which you can see below the next photo.
Kenkera is a famous Fukui sweet said to date back over 400 years, but everyone I asked in my town had never heard of it, even though Fukui shares a border with Kyoto, where I live. It is made from roasted soybean flour, mizuame (starch syrup), sugar, and white sesame seeds. It went well with the green tea. I enjoyed it.

写真上では、戦国時代の装いをした数人の女性の姿を見ることができる。彼女たちは100円で緑茶を販売していた。その緑茶には、下の写真に写っているお菓子が添えられていた。私はこのようなお菓子を初めて見たので、女性の一人に何というお菓子か尋ねてみた。すると「けんけら」だと教えてくれ、続けてそのお菓子についての短い唄のような口上を披露してくれた。とても面白かったのだが、内容を正確には覚えられなかったため、私なりに新しく作ったものを、次の写真の下に載せている。
けんけらは、400年以上の歴史があるとされる福井の名物菓子だという。しかし、京都在住の私が地元で尋ねてみた限りでは、誰もこのお菓子の名前を知らなかった。福井県は京都と隣接しているにもかかわらず、である。けんけらは、炒った大豆の粉、水飴、砂糖、白ごまを原料として作られている。緑茶との相性も良く、とても美味しくいただいた。

The Legend of Kenkera

In old Echizen, where the winters are long,
They make a confection that’s sturdy and strong.
It’s called Kenkera, a legendary treat,
But how did it get such a curious name to repeat?

The first tale tells of a kitchen disaster:
The candy was tough, but the cook no master!
A knife couldn’t cut it, no matter the force--
“We need a sword (ken)!” they cried, of course.

The second tale speaks of a lord full of pride,
Who studied his snack with his eyes open wide.
“As firm as a servant (kerai), loyal and true!”
He named it for those who his banner once knew.

The third tale is simpler, or so we are told:
A monk named Kenkeira, creative and bold,
Baked up a batch for the village to share,
And left his own name on the crunchy affair.

Was it a sword? A monk? Or a lord?
Was it ken, or Kenkeira, or ken-kerai’s word?
The truth’s lost in time, in the stories that pass—
Just mind your own teeth, so your smile will last!

越前名物：けんけら騒動記

越前大野の不思議な菓子は
名もなき菓子か「けんけら」か。
由来をたどれば三つの話
さてさてどれが本当か？

一つ、包丁歯が立たぬ！
「こいつは硬いぞ岩より硬い
「剣（けん）」でもなけりゃ切れやせぬ」
笑い話から名が残り。

二つ、お殿のお気に入り！
「この歯ごたえは我が家来（けらい）
忠義を尽くす堅物（かたぶつ）じゃ」
「「けん・けらい」だと膝を打つ。

三つ、お坊さん通りゃんせ！
修行の合間に建径羅（けんけいら）
自慢の菓子をこしらえて
名前をそのまま置いてった。

刀か家来かお坊さん。
答えは歴史の藪の中。
あなたも一口かじったら
カチリと謎が解けるかも？

This photo was taken inside a commoner’s merchant house where dyeing was carried out. During the Sengoku period, indigo was the most commonly used dye for the clothing of samurai and commoners alike, as the color was durable and the dye itself acted as a natural insect repellent.
There is a Japanese idiom, “Kon-ya no shiro-bakama” (“the dyer wears white hakama”). It is the Japanese equivalent of “the shoemaker’s children go barefoot,” meaning that someone is so busy working for others that they have no time to apply their skills to themselves.

この写真は、染物が行われていた町人の商家の内部で撮影したものである。戦国時代には、藍染が武士と庶民の双方にとって最も一般的な染料であった。色落ちしにくく、染料そのものに防虫効果があったためである。
「紺屋の白袴（こんやのしろばかま）」という日本のことわざがある。自分にはその技術や能力がありながら、他人のための仕事に追われて、自分自身にはそれを生かせない、という意味である。英語の “the shoemaker’s children go barefoot” も同様に、靴を作る職人の子どもでありながら裸足でいる、つまり技術はあっても身近なところには行き届かないことを表している。

The reconstructed buildings in the Ichijodani Restored Townscape have ishioki-itabuki roofing, wooden shingles held in place by large rocks. This style was also noticeable in the diorama at the Ichijodani Asakura Family Museum. Maybe I should wear a hardhat if I visit again.

一乗谷復原町並の復原建物には、石置板葺（いしおきいたぶき）と呼ばれる屋根が使われている。木の板を葺き、その上に大きな石を置いて押さえる工法である。この屋根の様子は、一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡博物館のジオラマでも印象的だった。次に訪れるときは、ヘルメットをかぶったほうがいいかもしれない。

While the Ichijodani Restored Townscape requires an entrance fee, the ruins on the west side of the Ichijodani River can be explored for free. This photo shows part of the Suwa Residence Garden Ruins, which are considered among the most magnificent and well-preserved examples of Sengoku-period landscaping in Japan. The site was originally the residence of the wife of Asakura Yoshikage, the fifth and final head of the Asakura clan.

一乗谷復原町並は入場料が必要だが、一乗谷川の西側に広がる遺跡は無料で見学することができる。この写真は、諏訪館跡庭園の一部で、戦国時代の庭園遺構としては日本でも屈指の規模と保存状態を誇るとされている。この場所は、朝倉氏第5代当主であり最後の当主である朝倉義景の正室が暮らしていた館の跡である。

This is a Karamon Gate, which marks the entrance to the Asakura Lords’ Residence Ruins (Asakura Yakata-ato). The gate itself was built much later for a temple called Shōun-in, which once stood on this site and was constructed to mourn the final lord, Asakura Yoshikage. A full-size reconstruction of part of the Asakura lord’s residence can be seen at the Ichijodani Asakura Family Museum.
The residence site is surrounded on three sides by a moat, which is home to many large, well-fed carp. I believe you can buy food for the carp near the entrance to the bridge, though there must be a daily limit. When I visited, an elderly, bent-over woman was standing on the bridge, peering down into the water. I found myself silently thinking, “Please don’t fall in. I’m the closest person and would have to jump in to rescue you.”
She was talking to the carp, which had gathered below as if eagerly waiting to be fed. It was quite amusing. She scolded them in a doting, grandmotherly way, saying things like, “Tabesugi! Mō dame!” (“Don’t be greedy! You’ve had enough!”). I really enjoyed listening to her one-sided conversation with the fish.

これは、朝倉氏館跡（あさくらやかたあと）の入口に建つ唐門である。この門自体は戦国時代のものではなく、後にこの地に建立された、朝倉義景を弔うための寺「松雲院（しょううんいん）」の門として建てられたものだ。朝倉氏の館の一部は、一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡博物館で実物大復原模型を見ることができる。
館跡は三方を堀に囲まれており、その堀には大きくて丸々と太った鯉がたくさん泳いでいる。橋の入口付近では鯉のエサを買えるようだが、さすがに一日の上限はあるのだろう。私が訪れたとき、背中の曲がったおばあさんが橋の上に立ち、身を乗り出すようにして堀の中をのぞき込んでいた。私は心の中で、「どうか落ちないでください。いちばん近くにいるのは私だから、助けに飛び込むことになります……」と、ひそかに思っていた。
そのおばあさんは、まるでエサを待って集まってきたかのような鯉たちに話しかけていた。それが実に微笑ましかった。孫をしかるような口調で、「食べすぎ！もうだめ！」などと鯉をたしなめている。私は、その一方通行の会話を、思わず楽しく聞き入ってしまった。

The valley is beautiful in autumn. This photo looks south, up the valley. At the far end of the valley, on the left-hand side, lies Ichijō Waterfall. While writing this, I learned that it is famous as the legendary training ground of Sasaki Kojirō, the rival of the most famous samurai in history, Miyamoto Musashi. It is said that Kojirō perfected his “Turning Swallow Cut” (Tsubame Gaeshi) technique by watching swallows at this very waterfall. Knowing that, I now wish I had visited it.
Ichijōdani is one of the finest examples of a “natural fortress” design in Japanese history. It was not merely a castle on a hill, but an entire city hidden within a narrow valley stretching nearly three kilometers. Steep mountains rose on both sides, and the valley itself was sealed off by two massive defensive gates. The true military stronghold, Ichijōdani Castle, where defenders could retreat in times of war, stood high above the valley on Mount Ichijō, at an elevation of 473 meters. Ironically, Ichijōdani did not fall because its defenses were breached, but because the Asakura army was defeated in a field battle outside the valley. When the survivors fled back, there were too few of them left to man the defenses. Oda Nobunaga simply walked through the gates and burned the city to the ground.

秋の一乗谷は本当に美しいです。この写真は、谷を南へ、上流方向に向かって撮影したものです。谷の奥、左手には一乗滝があります。この記事を書いている最中に知ったのですが、この滝は、歴史上最も有名な剣豪・宮本武蔵の宿敵として知られる佐々木小次郎の、伝説的な修行の地として知られています。小次郎は、この滝で燕の動きを観察しながら、「燕返し」の技を極めたと伝えられています。そう思うと、訪れておけばよかったと、今さらながら感じます。
一乗谷は、日本史における「天然の要塞」設計の最も優れた例の一つです。単なる山城ではなく、全長およそ3キロに及ぶ細長い谷全体が、一つの都市として機能していました。両側には険しい山々が迫り、谷の出入口は二つの巨大な防御門によって封鎖されていました。戦時に立てこもるための本格的な軍事拠点である一乗谷城は、標高473メートルの一乗山の山上に位置していました。
皮肉なことに、一乗谷が滅んだ原因は、防御施設が破られたからではありません。朝倉軍が谷の外での野戦に敗れたことが決定打となりました。生き残った兵が谷へ戻った時には、すでに広大な防御線を守るにはあまりにも人数が不足していたのです。織田信長は、ほとんど抵抗を受けることなく門を通り抜け、町を焼き払いました。

This photo shows the Planar Restoration Area, where the outlines of many houses can be seen packed closely together. What I found most striking were the square concrete boxes scattered throughout the site. These mark the locations of private wells, one for each household. In most medieval Japanese towns, water was drawn from shared communal wells, but excavations at Ichijodani revealed that almost every house in this district had its own. This points to an unusually advanced level of water infrastructure for the Sengoku period.
During that time, these wells were often lined with Shakudani stone, a blue-green volcanic stone found only in Fukui. When dry it appears pale blue-gray, but when wet it turns a deep, vivid blue-green known as Echizen Blue. The stone is no longer quarried today, making its presence here a rare and tangible link to Ichijodani’s past.
Standing among these quiet foundations, it is easy to imagine the town as it once was, not as ruins, but as a living city that vanished almost overnight.

この写真は「平面復原地区」を写したものです。多くの家屋の跡が、密集して並んでいる様子がよく分かります。中でも目を引いたのが、各所に見られる四角いコンクリート枠です。これは、それぞれの家に備えられていた私設井戸の位置を示しています。中世の日本の町では共同井戸が一般的でしたが、一乗谷の発掘調査では、この地区のほぼすべての家に専用の井戸があったことが分かっています。これは、戦国時代としては非常に高度で整った水利システムを備えていたことを示しています。
当時、これらの井戸には、福井特産の青緑色の石材である「笏谷石（しゃくだにいし）」が使われることが多くありました。乾いていると淡い青灰色ですが、水に濡れると「越前ブルー」と呼ばれる深く鮮やかな青緑色に変わるのが特徴です。現在は採掘されておらず、ここに残る笏谷石は、一乗谷の歴史を今に伝える貴重な痕跡でもあります。
静かな礎石の間に立っていると、ここがただの遺跡ではなく、かつては人々の暮らしが息づいていた町であり、それが一夜にして姿を消したのだということを実感させられます。

From Ryūsō Falls, I drove 22 km to the “Pompeii of Japan.” My first stop was the Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Family Museum. To my surprise, I was told the permanent exhibition was free that day, normally it costs 700 yen. Lucky timing.
Ichijōdani was the political and cultural heart of Echizen Province during the Sengoku period. It was a meticulously planned castle town ruled by the Asakura clan for five generations. Originally from Tajima (in present-day northern Hyōgo), the Asakura transformed a narrow valley into a thriving town of around 10,000 residents, often described as a “Little Kyoto,” and a center of refinement that attracted elite artisans and monks from an increasingly unstable capital (Kyoto).
The city’s prosperity ended in 1573, when Oda Nobunaga razed it to the ground. For the next 400 years, the ruins lay buried beneath rice paddies, untouched by modern development. This accidental preservation earned Ichijōdani the title “the Pompeii of Japan.” Today, the site offers a rare, intact blueprint of medieval life, revealing samurai estates, merchant districts, and some of Japan’s oldest stone gardens much as they stood five centuries ago. This knowledge of life in medieval Japan was made possible by the thousands of artifacts uncovered during excavations, artifacts that are now preserved and displayed in this museum.

龍双ヶ滝から車で22km走り、「日本のポンペイ」とも呼ばれる一乗谷へ向かいました。最初に訪れたのは、福井県立一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡博物館です。入館すると、その日は常設展が無料だと知らされました。通常は700円なので、思いがけず得をした気分でした。
一乗谷は戦国時代、越前国の政治・文化の中心地として栄えた城下町でした。朝倉氏が五代にわたって治めたこの町は、綿密に計画された造りを持ち、但馬国（現在の兵庫県）出身の朝倉氏によって、細長い谷あいに人口約1万人の繁栄した都市へと発展しました。その洗練された文化から「小京都」とも称され、不安定さを増す京の都から、職人や僧侶などの文化人を引き寄せました。
しかし、1573年に織田信長によって町は焼き討ちに遭い、その繁栄は終わりを迎えます。その後およそ400年間、遺跡は田畑の下に埋もれ、近代的な開発を免れたまま眠り続けました。この偶然の保存状態により、一乗谷は「日本のポンペイ」と呼ばれるようになります。現在では、武家屋敷や町人地、そして日本最古級の石庭など、中世の暮らしをそのまま伝える貴重な町並みが明らかになっています。こうした中世日本の人々の暮らしが明らかになったのは、発掘調査によって出土した数多くの遺物のおかげです。それらは現在、私が訪れているこの博物館で保存・展示されています。

Felt Saddle Cover (Replica)
In 1516, Asakura Takakage was granted permission to use a felt saddle cover, an honor that marked official recognition of the Asakura clan’s military and economic service to the shogunate. Made from red woolen cloth (rasha), a valuable imported material at the time, and decorated with silk tassels, such saddle covers were powerful symbols of status. This replica is based on a felt saddle cover traditionally associated with Uesugi Kenshin.

毛氈鞍覆（複製）
永正13年（1516）、朝倉家四代・孝景は、毛氈鞍覆の使用を初めて許されました。これは、朝倉氏の将軍に対する軍事・経済面での奉公が公式に認められたことを示すものであり、毛氈鞍覆は家格と権威を象徴する装身具でした。伝世品は、当時貴重だった輸入品の赤い毛織物（羅紗）で作られ、絹糸の房が縫い付けられています。本複製品は、上杉謙信所用と伝わる毛氈鞍覆（上杉神社蔵）を参考に製作されました。

This 1/30-scale diorama recreates over 100 structures, including merchant townhouses, temples, and samurai estates, that once stood within a 250-meter by 130-meter section of the valley. One striking detail is the ishioki-itabuki roofing: rows of river stones used as “natural nails” to hold wooden shingles in place against wind. Based on precise archaeological excavation data and populated with tiny, hand-placed figures, the model offers a vivid glimpse into the daily lives of the 10,000 people who lived here five centuries ago. I encountered the same ishioki-itabuki roofing on actual buildings during my visit to Tsumago-juku on the Nakasendō in 2024—click the link to see that blog post.

この1/30スケールのジオラマは、かつて谷あいの約250メートル×130メートルの範囲に広がっていた町並みを再現したもので、町屋や寺院、武家屋敷など100棟以上の建物が配置されています。注目すべき点のひとつが「石置板葺（いしおきいたぶき）」の屋根です。川原石を「自然の釘」のように並べ、板葺き屋根を風から守るこの工法は、山あいの土地ならではの知恵でした。精密な発掘調査データをもとに制作され、小さな人形が一体ずつ丁寧に配置されたこの模型からは、およそ500年前にここで暮らしていた1万人の人々の日常を生き生きと感じ取ることができます。

Large Storage Jars (Ōgame)
These large earthen-ware jars were used in townhouses for storing drinking water and for brewing liquids such as sake. Archaeological remains show the bases of these jars once lined up neatly inside buildings. They may also have been used for indigo dyeing. Looking inside the jar, you can see how it has been painstakingly reconstructed from many broken fragments recovered during excavation. Reassembling it is one job I’d happily leave to the professionals. It looks like a giant jigsaw puzzle with no picture on the box.

大甕（おおがめ）
これらの大型の甕は、城下町の町屋で飲料水の貯蔵や、酒などの醸造に使われていました。発掘調査では、建物の中に大甕の底部が整然と並んでいた遺構も確認されています。また、藍染を行うために使われていた可能性も指摘されています。甕の内側を見ると、発掘で出土した多くの破片を丹念につなぎ合わせて復元されたことがよく分かります。正直なところ、これを元に戻す作業は専門家にお任せしたいところ。完成図のない巨大なジグソーパズルのようで、私にはとても無理そうです。

Every time I see the Japanese word sukoppu, I’m taken back to my working-holiday days in Japan many years ago. One day a coworker said “sukoppu!” to me. I heard sutoppu, so I stopped. That only made him more frustrated. He said “sukoppu” again. Now I was really confused. I had already stopped, but apparently that wasn’t what he was saying. I followed his finger, looked where he was pointing, and finally realized what he actually wanted, the shovel. And that’s how I learned the Japanese word for shovel.
Sukoppu is actually a loanword, coming from schop, the Dutch word for shovel. And looking at this one, I can’t help wondering how people cleared snow with this shovel half a millennium ago. It looks like seriously hard work.

「スコップ」という言葉を見るたびに、昔、日本でワーキングホリデーをしていた頃の出来事を思い出します。ある日、同僚が私に向かって「スコップ！」と叫びました。ところが私はそれを「ストップ！」と聞き間違え、その場でピタッと止まってしまいました。
すると同僚は、さらにイライラした様子で「スコップ！」。私はもう完全に混乱です。ちゃんと止まっているのに、なぜまだ「ストップ」と言うのか。そこで彼の指差す先を見て、ようやく気づきました。「ああ、止まれじゃなくて、スコップを取れってことか。」こうして私は「スコップ」という日本語を覚えました。
ちなみに「スコップ」は、オランダ語の schop に由来する外来語だそうです。
それにしても……今から約500年前のこんなスコップで雪かきをすることを想像すると、なかなか大変そうですね。

Song-Dynasty Coins in Sengoku Japan
These bundles contain Genpō Tsūhō coins, Chinese copper coins cast during the Northern Song dynasty (1078–1085). Imported into Japan in large quantities, such coins formed the backbone of everyday currency during the Sengoku period. The round shape with a square central hole allowed them to be strung together, and here they are tied in standard bundles of 100 coins, a common unit for storage, transport, and accounting.
Despite being foreign currency, Song-dynasty coins like these were widely trusted and circulated alongside other forms of money, including locally cast coins, rice payments, barter goods, and occasional gold or silver by weight. Finds like these bundles from Ichijōdani offer a tangible glimpse into how money actually moved through the hands of merchants, samurai, and townspeople in medieval Japan.
Hang on a minute! The dates don’t seem to add up. Coins cast in the Song dynasty (1078–1085) and a city destroyed in 1573? At least that was my initial reaction. But in Sengoku Japan, coins like Genpō Tsūhō stayed in circulation for centuries. In other words, by the time Ichijōdani fell, these coins were already several hundred years old and still doing their job.

これらの束は、北宋時代（1078～1085年）に中国で鋳造された銅銭、元豊通宝です。大量に日本へ流入したこれらの宋銭は、戦国時代における日常的な通貨の中心を担っていました。中央に四角い穴の開いた円形の形状は紐で通すのに適しており、ここでは保管や運搬、会計の単位として一般的だった100枚一束にまとめられています。
外国製の貨幣でありながら、宋代の銭は高い信頼性を持ち、日本では国産銭のほか、米による支払い、物々交換、さらには秤量による金銀などと併用されていました。こうした一束の銭は、商人や武士、町人たちの手を実際にどのように貨幣が行き交っていたのかを、今に伝えてくれます。
……ちょっと待ってください。年代が合わないのでは？
宋代（1078～1085年）の銭と、1573年に滅亡した一乗谷——少なくとも最初はそう思ってしまいました。しかし戦国時代の日本では、元豊通宝のような銭が何世代にもわたって使われ続けていたのです。つまり、一乗谷が滅びた頃には、これらの銭はすでに数百年選手。それでもなお、現役で使われていたというわけです。

Lead Ammunition and Early Firearms
These lead rods and bullets, along with components of firing mechanisms, are associated with tanegashima teppō, the matchlock firearms that transformed warfare in Japan during the late Sengoku period. Firearms were first introduced to Japan in 1543, when Portuguese traders arrived on Tanegashima Island, and Japanese craftsmen soon mastered and mass-produced the technology.
Much of the lead used for ammunition was imported from Siam (modern-day Thailand) through Southeast Asian trade networks. In addition to cast lead bullets, guns were sometimes loaded with tsuchi-dama, ceramic projectiles used when metal was scarce or for close-range fighting, as their lighter weight meant they did not travel as far as lead shot.
By the time Ichijōdani fell in 1573, firearms were no longer experimental weapons but a regular part of warfare. The remains displayed here remind us that the fall of the Asakura clan unfolded in an age when swords and spears were increasingly joined, and sometimes outmatched, by gunpowder.

これらの鉛棒（えんぼう）や弾丸、そして発射機構の部品は、戦国時代後期に日本の戦い方を大きく変えた**種子島鉄砲（火縄銃）**に関わる遺物です。鉄砲は1543年、ポルトガル人が種子島に来航したことで日本にもたらされ、日本の職人たちはまもなくその技術を習得し、大量生産を可能にしました。

1573年に一乗谷が滅びた頃には、鉄砲はすでに試験的な武器ではなく、戦場で一般的に用いられる存在となっていました。ここに展示された遺物は、朝倉氏の終焉が、刀や槍に加えて火薬兵器が重要な役割を果たし始めた時代に起こったことを、今に伝えています。

Sengoku Period Costume Dressing Experience
Here, you can try on costumes from the Sengoku period, with sizes available for both children and adults. The experience costs 500 yen for 50 minutes. You can take photos inside the lord’s residence, and you might even be able to sit on the raised tatami mat in front of the alcove shown below and pretend you’re a Sengoku-era warlord.

From Echizen-Ōno Castle, there is a shorter route to Ryūsō Falls of about 20 km. However, the road looked extremely narrow, and I imagined it would be a nightmare for my large car if I met oncoming traffic. At one point, I even considered driving as far as the Former Hashimoto Residence and cycling from there. In the end, though, I decided not to bring my mountain bike on this trip.
Instead, I took the longer 27 km route and approached from the Ikeda side. A large dam is currently under construction there, so it was interesting to drive past the site and see the scale of the project. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but Ikeda has several other interesting sightseeing spots, including the Kazura (vine) Bridge. That’s something I may explore on another visit.
One practical note: the road to Ryūsō Falls is closed during winter, usually from November to March.

越前大野城から龍双ヶ滝へは、約20kmの近道があります。しかし、その道はかなり狭そうに見え、大きな車で対向車とすれ違うことを考えると、少し気が重くなりました。そこで一時は、旧橋本家住宅まで車で行き、そこから自転車で向かうことも考えましたが、今回はマウンテンバイクを持って行かないことにしました。
結局、27kmほどの遠回りにはなりますが、池田方面から向かうことにしました。現在、その周辺では大規模なダム工事が行われており、工事現場の横を通るのはなかなか興味深い体験でした。訪れた当時は気づきませんでしたが、池田町には福井のかずら橋など、ほかにも見どころがあるようです。次の機会にゆっくり巡ってみたいと思います。
なお、龍双ヶ滝へ向かう道路は、冬季（11月〜3月頃）には通行止めになります。

Fallen leaves carpet the No. 1 car park at Ryūsō Falls. I expected the road to be narrow on the last stretch to here, but it wasn’t too bad. There seemed to be plenty of places to pass oncoming cars if necessary.

龍双ヶ滝の第1駐車場は、落ち葉で一面が覆われていました。ここへ向かう最後の区間は道がかなり狭いのではないかと予想していましたが、思ったほどではありませんでした。必要であれば、対向車とすれ違える場所も十分にありそうです。

I arrived early in the morning and was the first person there. The air was crisp and delicious. This place lies deep in the mountains, and the stillness felt blissful. When I stepped out of the car, I caught an unfamiliar scent — something animal, something wild, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Instantly, my senses shifted into bear-alert mode, and I reached for my bear spray.
There were no sounds, no movement, no sign of life at all. Perhaps it was just a figment of my imagination. After all, bears have everyone on edge this autumn. I can instantly recognize the smell of deer, but what a bear actually smells like is still a mystery to me.

早朝に到着すると、そこには誰もおらず、最初の訪問者は私だけでした。空気はひんやりとしていて、とても美味しく感じられます。ここは山奥にあり、あたりは心地よいほどの静けさに包まれていました。車を降りた瞬間、どこか違和感のある匂いが鼻をつきました。動物のような、野生的な匂いなのですが、正体がはっきりしません。その途端、警戒心が一気に高まり、思わず熊よけスプレーに手が伸びました。
しかし、周囲は静まり返ったまま。物音もなく、気配もありません。もしかすると、ただの気のせいだったのかもしれません。この秋は熊の話題が多く、誰もが神経質になっています。鹿の匂いならすぐに分かるのですが、熊がどんな匂いなのかは、今でもよく分かりません。

Ryūsō Falls is 60 meters high, and its name means “Twin Dragon Falls.” From the parking area, it’s a very short and pleasant walk of about 200 meters along a narrow road beside the river to reach the waterfall. The falls are clearly visible from the road, making this one of the easiest large waterfalls to reach that I’ve visited in Japan.
Surprisingly, Ryūsō Falls is the only waterfall in Fukui Prefecture included in Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. I had thought Hotoke-gozen Falls was also on the list, but I must have confused it with its height, which is 100 meters.

龍双ヶ滝は高さ60メートルあり、名前は「双子の龍の滝」という意味です。駐車場から滝までは、川沿いの細い道を約200メートル歩くだけで、気持ちのよい散策路になっています。道路からでも滝の全体がよく見えるため、私がこれまで訪れた大きな滝の中でも、特にアクセスしやすい滝のひとつだと感じました。
意外なことに、龍双ヶ滝は福井県で唯一「日本の滝百選」に選ばれている滝だそうです。私はてっきり仏御前の滝も入っていると思っていたのですが、どうやら「高さ100メートル」という数字だけが頭に残っていて、百選と高さを混同していたようです。

Legends of Ryūsō Falls
Ryūsō Falls is linked to two traditional legends that reflect how waterfalls were understood in Japanese belief.
One story connects the waterfall to a mountain ascetic monk known as Ryūsō (龍双坊). He is said to have trained in this remote area, using the waterfall as part of his religious practice. In Japanese tradition, waterfalls were believed to purify both body and spirit, and ascetic monks often stood beneath them to test their endurance and faith. Over time, the place itself came to be associated with the monk’s name.
The second legend tells of a dragon living beneath the waterfall. In Japanese folklore, dragons are closely connected to water and rain, and this dragon was believed to watch over the surrounding land. During periods of drought, it was said to climb the waterfall and rise into the sky, bringing rain to the region. While the deep pool described in this legend is mythical rather than geological, the story reflects the long-standing connection between waterfalls, rain, and spiritual power in Japan.

龍双ヶ滝にまつわる伝説
龍双ヶ滝には、日本における滝の捉え方をよく表す、二つの伝説が伝えられています。
ひとつは、「龍双坊（りゅうそうぼう）」と呼ばれる山岳修行僧にまつわる話です。彼はこの人里離れた地で修行を行い、滝を修行の場として用いていたと伝えられています。日本では古くから、滝は身と心を清める場所と考えられており、修行僧たちは滝に打たれることで、忍耐力や信仰心を試しました。やがて、この地そのものが僧の名と結びつけられるようになったとされています。
もうひとつの伝説は、滝の下に龍が棲んでいたというものです。日本の民間信仰において、龍は水や雨と深く結びついた存在であり、この龍もまた、周囲の土地を見守る存在と考えられていました。干ばつの際には、龍が滝を登って天に昇り、雨をもたらしたといわれています。伝説に登場する深い滝壺は、実際の地形とは異なるものですが、この話は、滝・雨・霊的な力が結びついてきた日本の長い信仰の歴史をよく表しています。

You can climb down a few steps from the road to the river’s edge and get even closer to the waterfall at its base. It would be a great spot to escape the summer heat.

道路から少し階段を下りると川辺まで行くことができ、滝壺のすぐ近くまで寄ることができます。夏の暑さをしのぐには、絶好の場所です。

Just a short walk down the road from the car park brings you to the Ou Caves, a scenic spot designated by Ikeda Town. Despite the name, these are not underground caves. Instead, they are pothole like rock formations carved directly into the riverbed. Over centuries, fast-moving water, swirling stones, and sediment slowly carved these smooth, rounded hollows into solid rock.

It is a quiet place where you can fully experience nature’s great power and its mystery.

駐車場から道路を少し歩くと、池田町が景勝地として指定しているオウ穴群に着きます。名前から想像されるような洞窟ではなく、川底の岩盤に直接刻まれた、いわばポットホール状の岩のくぼみです。何百年もの間、流れの速い水と渦を巻く石や砂が作用し、硬い岩に丸く滑らかな穴を少しずつ作り上げてきました。

神経がピリピリしている／落ち着かない／緊張している状態
を表す表現です。
何か悪いことが起こりそうな時や、不安・警戒心が続いている時によく使われます。

I decided to spend the night at Kameyama-nishi Parking Lot which is located on the west side of the castle. The main city of Ono is located on the east side of the castle, so the west side seemed like a nice quite spot. And of course, there is a toilet there.

城の西側にある亀山西駐車場で一晩過ごすことにした。
大野の市街地は城の東側に広がっているので、西側は静かで落ち着いていそうだった。
それに、トイレがあるのもありがたい。

This map shows information about Kameyama Park and also points of interest on the east side. I would have liked to wander over there, but my legs strongly objected. Entering the castle itself costs about ¥400, but you can walk around the grounds and right up to the building for free. It’s closed during winter, though.

この地図には、亀山公園の案内と、城の東側にある見どころも載っている。
本当ならそちらもぶらぶら歩いてみたかったのだが、足が強く抗議してきた。
天守の内部に入るにはたしか400円ほどかかるが、敷地内を歩いて建物のすぐ近くまで行くのは無料だ。
ただし、冬季は閉館している。

A "Beware of Monkeys ... If you see them, don't feed them" sign. I see a lot of 'Beware of Bears' signs, but this is only the second 'Beware of Monkeys' sign that I remember seeing. The first one was at Sekigahara.

「クマ出没注意」の看板はよく見かけるが、「サル出没注意」を見たのは、記憶にある限りこれで二度目だ。最初に見たのは関ヶ原だった。

As dusk was about to set in, I decided I wanted to check out the castle grounds on top of Kameyama. Yes! … sorry, legs … that meant another bout of pain for you. There is a gentler but much longer path off to the side of the steps. However, darkness was closing in, so I decided to head straight up the stairs. This would be a great place to retire. You could climb up here every day and stay strong—though you’d probably need to hibernate in winter.

夕暮れが迫る中、亀山の山頂にある城の周辺を少し見て回ることにした。
よし！……ごめん、足……つまり、またしても君たちには“痛みのおかわり”というわけだ。
階段の脇には、もっと緩やかでずっと長い道もある。だが、あたりはもう暗くなりかけていたので、思いきって階段を直登することにした。
ここは老後を過ごすには最高の場所かもしれない。毎日ここを登れば足腰は鍛えられるだろう。ただし、冬は冬眠が必要になりそうだ。

Built around 1575 (about 450 years ago) and perched on Kameyama, the castle was designed to watch over the Ono Basin. Ono prospered as a key crossroads linking Echizen Province with neighboring Mino Province, as well as routes further south toward Kyoto and Owari. These roads made Ono an important hub for the movement of people, goods, and military forces. Over time, 19 lords served at Echizen-Ono Castle.

1575年ごろ、今からおよそ450年前に築かれた越前大野城は、亀山の山頂にあり、大野盆地を見渡すために造られた。
大野は、越前国と隣接する美濃国を結び、さらに京都や尾張へと続く街道の要衝として発展した。
これらの道によって、人や物資、そして軍勢の移動においても重要な拠点となった。
これまでに19人が越前大野城の城主を務めている。

Good night. I had a long, comfortable sleep here and recharged my batteries. It turned out to be a great place to stay.

This is Kameyama-nishi Parking Area where I spent my second night in Ono City. It's actually not far from here to walk to the trail entrance for the Sky Castle Lookout
ここは、私が大野市で二晩目を過ごした亀山西駐車場。ここから「天空の城展望台」への登山口までも、実はそれほど遠くない。

I wondered what the unkai (sea of clouds) would look like from Echizen-Ono Castle, so early the next morning I climbed those steps to the castle once again. As you can see in the photo looking across Ono City toward Mt. Arashima, there was very little mist this time, even though the conditions were almost identical to the previous day, when the fog was thick. Just to the left of Mt. Arashima lies the valley with the road leading toward Gifu Prefecture, known as Mino Province in earlier times.

越前大野城から見る雲海はどんな景色になるのだろうかと思い、翌朝早く、もう一度あの階段を登って城まで行った。
写真は、大野市越しに、その奥に荒島岳を望んだものだが、この朝は前日とほぼ同じ条件だったにもかかわらず、霧はほとんど出ていなかった。
荒島岳の少し左手には、岐阜県（かつての美濃国）へと通じる谷がある。

When I used to take photos like this, I would tell my mother it was a missile from North Korea. At first she’d be alarmed, but of course she soon realized I was joking. This, of course, is just a jet’s contrail. Still, it looks rather romantic, streaking across the glowing sky just before sunrise.

こんな写真を撮ると、以前は母に「北朝鮮のミサイルだよ」と言っていた。最初は本気で驚くのだが、もちろんすぐに冗談だと気づく。もちろん、これはジェット機が残した飛行機雲だ。夜明け直前、ほんのりと光る空を横切っていく様子は、なかなかロマンチックでもある。

These brown-eared bulbuls were some of my companions at the castle.
When I arrived, a man was doing exercises in front of the castle. As I walked past to admire the view, I greeted him with an “ohayō gozaimasu.” It was cold, so I had my hoodie on. He started talking to me, but suddenly stopped with an “Oh!” when I turned toward him and he realized I wasn’t Japanese.
I told him, “It’s okay, I understand Japanese,” so he continued what he was saying. He asked if I knew about “Fuji Diamond.” I said yes, and he told me that you can see “Arashima Diamond” from here. He said it happens sometime in November, though he wasn’t sure exactly which day.
I thanked him and said I’d wait and see. He was a very friendly local, greeting everyone who passed by. After that, he headed down the steps and joined two elderly ladies for some morning exercises, which you can see in the video below.

城では、このヒヨドリたちが、この朝のちょっとした仲間だった。
到着すると、城の前で体操をしている男性がいた。景色を眺めながら通りかかったときに「おはようございます」と声をかけると、寒くてフーディーを着ていたこともあり、最初は日本人だと思ったらしく話しかけてきた。ところが、私が振り向くと外国人だと気づいたようで、「あっ」と言って言葉を止めた。
そこで「大丈夫です。日本語わかりますよ」と伝えると、話を続けてくれた。彼は「富士ダイヤモンド」を知っているかと聞き、「ここからは荒島ダイヤモンドが見えるんですよ」と教えてくれた。時期は11月頃だそうだが、はっきりした日は分からないとのことだった。
お礼を言って「じゃあ、楽しみに待ってみます」と伝えた。彼は通りかかる人たちに気さくに挨拶をする、とても感じのいい地元の方だった。その後、階段を下りていき、年配の女性二人と一緒に朝の体操を始めた。その様子は、下の動画で見ることができる。

Arashima Diamond.
I think the sun would have been perfectly aligned over the summit of Mt. Arashima a few days later, as it continued its slow southward movement. Without using the zoom, though, it looked as if the sun was directly above the peak a minute or so later when viewed with the naked eye.
Mt. Arashima is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and, at 1,523 meters, the highest mountain located entirely within Fukui Prefecture. It is also a very popular mountain for hiking, especially during the fresh green leaf season in spring and the autumn foliage season.
The highest peak in Fukui Prefecture is actually Mt. San-no-mine, which lies on the border with Ishikawa Prefecture.

荒島ダイヤモンド。
太陽が少しずつ南へ移動していくので、あと数日すれば、ちょうど荒島岳の山頂に重なる位置になっていたと思う。
ただ、ズームせず肉眼で見ると、ほんの1分ほど後には、すでに山頂の真上に来ているように見えた。
荒島岳は日本百名山の一つで、標高1,523メートル、福井県内に位置する山としては最も高い山である。
また、新緑の季節や紅葉の時期には、登山者にとても人気のある山でもある。
なお、福井県で最も標高が高い山は、石川県との県境に位置する三ノ峰である。

Morning sunlight set the autumn leaves around the castle aglow, at their most vibrant.
朝の陽ざしに照らされ、城のまわりの紅葉が最も鮮やかな色に輝いていた。

From the back of the castle, I could see the “Castle in the Sky Lookout” that I had climbed the day before. I marked its location with a yellow circle in the photo above, and then zoomed in on the lookout in the photo below.
You can see everyone hoping against hope that the mist might somehow appear. Unfortunately for them, even though the conditions were almost the same as the day before, there was no unkai (sea of clouds) that morning. While I couldn’t help but find the expressions on their faces a little comical, I also felt sorry for them for not being rewarded for their effort.

城の裏手から、前日に登った「天空の城展望台」が見えた。
上の写真では、その場所を黄色い丸で示し、下の写真では展望台をズームしている。
そこには、どうにか霧が出てくれないかと、皆が望みをつないで待っている様子が写っている。
残念ながら、前日とほぼ同じ条件だったにもかかわらず、この朝は雲海が現れなかった。
その表情はどこか微笑ましくもあったが、せっかくの努力が報われなかったことを思うと、同情せずにはいられなかった。

After enjoying my early morning at Echizen-Ono Castle and being left with a good impression of the place, I drove 27km to my next destination, Ryūsō Falls.
越前大野城での早朝の時間を満喫し、この場所に良い印象を残したまま、次の目的地である龍双ヶ滝へと、27キロほど車を走らせた。

Hotoke-gozen was a shirabyōshi, one of the elegant female dancers of late Heian Japan, known for performing in white men’s court robes and dancing with a fan and short sword. In The Tale of the Heike, the medieval epic that recounts the rise and fall of the Taira clan, she appears as a young dancer of striking beauty and talent. Her voice and movement were said to enchant even Taira no Kiyomori, the most powerful man of the age. Like many figures in the Heike, her story is marked by ambition, shifting fortunes, jealousy, and the Buddhist reminder that worldly glory fades like morning mist.
Here in Ono, people say Hotoke-gozen was born in Tochizawa, a small hamlet now lying beneath the waters of Hotokebara Dam, just across the road from the waterfall. According to this legend, she once washed her face and hair at the falls, and over time the place came to be known as Hotokegozen Falls. The water descends roughly 100 meters in three bold stages from Mount Arashima, flowing strongly throughout the year, especially beautiful in the fresh green of spring and in autumn leaf season, which is when I visited.

仏御前は、平安時代末期に活躍した優雅な白拍子の一人で、白い男装の狩衣に身を包み、扇と短刀を手に舞ったことで知られています。軍記物語『平家物語』にもその名が登場し、若くして美貌と舞の才に恵まれた女性として描かれています。その歌声と舞は、当時権勢を誇った平清盛さえも魅了したと言われています。欲望や栄華、嫉妬、そして「盛者必衰」という仏教的無常観に彩られた物語の中で、彼女の生涯もまた、時代の波に翻弄された人物の一例です。
ここ大野では、古い文献にははっきりと残っていないもう一つの伝承が語り継がれています。仏御前は、滝の向こう側にある仏原ダムの底に沈んだ依原栃沢の生まれであると伝えられており、かつてこの滝で顔や髪を洗ったとも言われています。やがてその名が滝に結びつき、「仏御前の滝」と呼ばれるようになりました。滝は日本百名山の一つ・荒島岳を源に、高さ約100メートルを三段にわたり豪快に落ち、年間を通して水が絶えることはありません。特に新緑の季節や紅葉の頃は格別の美しさを見せてくれます。私が訪れたのもその頃でした。

As I was leaving Heisenji, I drove past the castle again—this time on the opposite side. After doing a bit of research, I learned that this wasn’t actually the original site of Katsuyama Castle at all, but a modern building called the Katsuyama Castle Museum. Standing 57.8 meters tall with six floors, it’s the tallest castle-style structure in Japan. The exterior looks like a traditional castle, but inside it functions as a museum, displaying samurai armor, weapons, historical artifacts, and cultural exhibits. The top floor is an observatory that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. When I lined up my camera with the edge of a rice field, the angle made the building look like the “Leaning Castle of Katsuyama.”

平泉寺を後にして車を走らせていると、またこの城の前を通りましたが、今度は反対側からでした。少し調べてみると、ここは本来の勝山城の場所ではなく、「勝山城博物館」という現代の建物だということがわかりました。高さ57.8メートル、6階建てで、日本一高い“城風”の建造物だそうです。外観はまるで本物の城ですが、中は博物館になっていて、甲冑や武具、歴史資料や文化展示が並んでいます。最上階は展望フロアで、周辺を一望できます。
田んぼの畦と角度を合わせて撮ったら、まるで「勝山の斜塔」みたいになってしまいました。

The carpark at Hotoke-gozen Waterfall fits about five cars. The trail begins with the view you see here: a long, brutally straight staircase shooting up toward the ridge. Sorry, legs ... it’s time for another round of pain! And yes, when you finally reach the top of these stairs, you’re greeted by… even more stairs. But that little spark of adventure kicks in, and somehow my worn-out legs keep going.

仏御前の滝の駐車場は、車が5台ほど停められるくらいの広さです。
そして登山道のスタートがこの景色。一直線に伸びる急な階段が、いきなり山の稜線へ向かってドーンとそびえています。
「ごめん、僕の足……また試練の時間だよ。」
とつぶやきつつ登っていくと、案の定、上に着いたところで待っているのは——はい、また階段。
でも不思議なもので、冒険心がちょっとだけスイッチオンして、疲れた足もなんとか働いてくれました。

From the top of the second staircase, it’s an easy walk to the waterfall. It’s difficult to capture the whole thing in one photo, this is definitely a waterfall that really needs a drone to do it justice. Still, if you’re a waterfall fan, it’s absolutely worth the climb to see it up close.
You can hear it for yourself in the video below. Oops! In my enthusiasm to capture the entire waterfall, I rotated my camera forgetting that it would turn the video sideways. Please tilt your head carefully and remain seated while watching it.

二つ目の階段を登りきると、滝までは歩きやすい道が続きます。
ただ、この滝は全体を一枚の写真に収めるのがなかなか難しく、ドローンがあれば一番きれいに撮れるタイプです。
それでも、滝好きなら登ってくる価値は十分あります。

滝全体を収めようと張り切りすぎた結果、カメラを回したまま撮影してしまい、動画が横向きになっています。

Looking back down the gully from the waterfall, you can see the gentler section of the trail, the waters of the dam, and the mountains glowing with autumn foliage.

滝から谷を振り返ると、なだらかな登山道とダムの水面、そして紅葉に染まって輝く山々が見渡せます。

When I got back to my car, I found this little fellow on the ground. Yes, it's a stinkbug with a heart shape on its back. Actually this is the second time I've seen this kind of stinkbug. The first time was in Miyazu City near Takigami Park when I climbing up to Mt. Hiraiwa. It's called 'esaki-monki-tsuno-kamemushi' in Japanese. Based on this, I'll give it the following English name 'Esaki yellow heart horned stinkbug'. Its back is fascinating to look at up close, almost like something crafted by hand.

車に戻ると、地面にこの小さなヤツがいました。そう、背中にハート模様をもつカメムシです。実はこのカメムシを見るのはこれで二度目。最初に見たのは、宮津市の滝上公園近くから平岩山に登ったときでした。「エサキモンキツノカメムシ」と呼ばれています。近くで見るとその背中は本当に魅力的で、まるで誰かが細工を施したかのようです。

From Hotoke-gozen Falls, I drove 8 km back down the valley to Road Station Echizen Ono Arashima no Sato, located at the edge of the plains where Ono City begins. The place was clearly popular. Outside, there was a dog run, a climbing pinnacle for trying out rock climbing, and even a pond where you could experience canoeing. Inside, I found a large Montbell store, a souvenir shop, and a food court. I love a good gourmet burger, so I made a beeline for the burger shop Bunny Superette.

仏御前の滝から谷を8kmほど下ると、平野に広がる大野市の入口にある「道の駅越前おおの荒島の郷」に着きました。ここはとても人気のあるスポットのようです。外にはドッグランやロッククライミングが体験できるクライミングピナクル、さらにカヌー体験ができる池までありました。館内には大型のモンベルショップ、土産物店、フードコートがあります。私はグルメバーガーが大好きなので、迷わずバーガーショップ「Bunny Superette」へ向かいました。

It was 2:30 p.m., and I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast. Bunny Superette had 12 Kuroge Wagyu beef burgers on the menu, so I went for the gorgonzola-and-honey burger. It turned out to be a bit of a challenge to eat ... there was so much juice collecting in the bag (thanks, I assume, to the “honey”) that I had to be careful not to make a mess. The gorgonzola also kept sticking to the corners of my mouth. Trying not to look piggy in front of everyone, I ended up focusing more on how to eat the thing than actually enjoying its flavor.

昼の2時半、朝から何も食べていなかったので、そろそろ体が「ごはん下さい」と訴えてくる頃でした。『Bunny Superette』には黒毛和牛バーガーが12種類もあったので、その中からゴルゴンゾーラ＆ハニーバーガーを選んでみました。ところが食べてみると、袋の底に“ハニー”由来と思われる肉汁がたっぷり溜まっていて、こぼさないように食べるのが大変。しかもゴルゴンゾーラが口の端にくっつくので、周りの目も気になって、味わうというより“どう食べるか”に集中してしまいました。

After the burger, I wandered around the Montbell shop and the souvenir shop. Then I decided to try sauce katsudon, Fukui’s well-known Worcestershire-style pork cutlet rice bowl. Unfortunately, this one didn’t go well for me. I couldn’t even bite through the first piece of pork. I turned it sideways and somehow managed to tear it apart with my teeth, but it was as tough as leather and didn’t have much flavor. The other two pieces were only a little better. On top was a big mound of grated daikon, which seemed to be where the sauce was hiding, judging by the color. But the pork itself had almost no Worcestershire taste at all. Maybe I should have researched some restaurants before the trip.

バーガーを食べたあと、モンベルやお土産コーナーをぶらぶら見て回り、せっかく福井に来たんだからと名物の「ソースカツ丼」にも挑戦してみることにしました。
……が、ここでまさかの大失敗。最初の一切れを口に入れたものの、全然噛み切れない。仕方なく横にしてなんとか歯で引きちぎりましたが、まるで革のような硬さで味もほとんど感じられず。残りの二切れは、ほんの少しだけ“マシ”というレベルでした。
上には大きな大根おろしがドンとのっていて、色的にたぶんソースはそこに滞在していた模様。でも肝心のカツからはウスターソース感ゼロ。
「やっぱり旅の前にはお店をリサーチすべきだったかも…」と、しみじみ思った一杯でした。

The day after I got back to Miyazu, I happened to spot a bento labeled “Fukui’s famous Worcestershire-style pork cutlet rice bowl.” And it was much cheaper. Naturally, I had to give it a second chance. This time the meat was tender, and the Worcestershire flavor actually tasted great.
After my late lunch at Road Station Echizen Ono Arashima no Sato , I sat on a bench near the dog run, soaking up the last of the afternoon sun as it dropped toward the horizon and watched the dogs chase each other around. Then, feeling recharged, I headed back to Echizen Ono Castle.

宮津に戻った翌日、「福井名物：ソースカツ丼」と書かれたお弁当をたまたま見つけました。しかも本場で食べたものよりずっと安い。これはもう“リベンジ”するしかありません。食べてみると、今度のカツはやわらかく、ウスターソースの味もしっかりしていてとても美味しかったです。
その遅めの昼食を道の駅「越前おおの荒島の郷」で食べたあと、ドッグランのそばのベンチに腰を下ろし、地平線へ沈みかける午後の陽を浴びながら、元気に走り回る犬たちをのんびり眺めていました。そうしてすっかり元気が戻ったところで、再び越前大野城へ向かいました。
