みたらい渓谷

みたらい渓谷　Mitarai Gorge

奈良県、天川村、みたらい渓谷（御手洗渓谷）に冒険をしに行ってきました。午後9時に仕事が終わって、午後10前に出発しました。みたらい渓谷は奈良県の奥の方にあります。午前2時前に着きました。月の明るい夜だったので、途中色んな野生動物が見えると思いました。しかし、2匹の大きいイタチのようなものしか見ませんでした。行く前に天気予報を見て、最低気温が6度になると書いてありました。しかし．．．

I went on an adventure to Mitarai Gorge, Tenkawa Village, Nara Prefecture. I finished work at 9 p.m. and left home before 10 p.m. Mitarai Gorge is in the mountains deep in Nara Prefecture. I arrived before 2 a.m. Because it was a bright moonlit night, I thought that I'd see various wild animals along the way. But all I saw were 2 rather large ferret type animals. Before leaving, I checked the weather forecast which said that the overnight low would be 6℃. BUT ......

そうですよ。到着したときに零下２度でした。Yes! It was -2℃ when I arrived.

私の心地よいベッド　My comfortable bed.

起きたときに零下3度でした。 It was -3℃ when I got up.

霜が降りていたよ。気持ちがいい朝でした。 There was frost on the ground. The morning felt nice and fresh.

車の上にも霜が．．． There was even frost on my car roof.

この早い時間でも車がたくさんありました。There were quite a few cars in the car park even at this early time in the morning.

ここで駐車しました。 I parked here at Kanonmine Mountain Trail Entrance Rest Area.

色んな伝説がありそうです。 This area seems to have a few legends

みたらい渓谷の上流にある観音峰登山口休憩所で駐車しました。この休憩所が広くて、無料で、道路が狭くないからここを選んだ。渓谷の下流は狭いし、有料駐車場（1時間300円）があります。しかし、すぐに疲れる方でしたら、下流から上った方がいいと思います。　I parked at the Kanonmine Mountain Trail Rest Area located at the top of Mitarai gorge.. The reason for this is that it's free, a good size, and the road to here isn't narrow. There isn't a lot of space at the bottom of the gorge and what few car parks there are cost ￥300/hr. However, if you tire easily, then I suggest you walk from the bottom..

いいね！いいね！この名前の英語がいい感じです。 I like the name of this area.

行ってきま～す。橋が揺れているよ！ And off we go. Whoa! The bridge is swaying!

あ～！いい感じ！と思ったら．．． Ah! It's nice through here. As I was thinking that ......

．．．この標識がありました。...... I came across this (bear habitat) sign.

落ちないように．．． Hoping it doesn't fall off.

私の大きい足に合わない階段。せまい～！歩きにくい！ These stairs are difficult for my big feet to walk on. The steps are really narrow.

川の色がものすごくきれいです。写真よりきれいな色です。The water is a really beautiful color. My camera doesn't do it justice.

哀伝橋（吊り橋）。揺れているよ。 Aiden Bashi Bridge. It's sways when you walk across it.

狭い！　Narrow!

トンネルの向こう側に無料で駐車できる場所がありそうです。 It looks like there is a place you can park for free on the other side of the tunnel.

ここから同じ道で車に戻りました。ところで、みたらい(御手洗)という名前が面白いですね。この情報を見つけました。　「みたらい」の名は、南朝の帝がミソギ（御手洗）をしたとの伝説に由来　 I went back to my car on the same path from here.　By the way, The Chinese characters for 'Mitarai' peaked my curiosity. They are the same for 'otearai', which means toilet in Japanese. I found out that there is, of course,  a legend to the origin of this name.

滝の霧に虹がかかった。　A rainbow appeared in the waterfall mist.

川の色が神秘的な色です。　The water is a mystical color.

こんな赤色の葉もありました。しかし、今年は遅いだそうです。来週か再来週に赤い葉がもっとたくさんでるそうです。 There were red leaves like this too. However, the red leaves are apparently late this year. There will be many more coming out in another week or two.

ただいま！　I'm back!

駐車場が満車です。 The car park is full.

素晴らしい冒険でした。みたらい渓谷は「ええとこ」です。幸せの時間を過ごせました。
