The Day the Forest Exploded → 森が炸裂した日

In July, I had an unexpected thrill on Takiba Forestry Road.
I was riding up the mountain valley alongside the stream, soaking in the calm and listening to a woodpecker drum away, when suddenly—crash! A loud commotion erupted just meters from me. Out burst three wild boars — two adults and a hefty juvenile — crashing through the undergrowth and bolting away from me. My heart jumped. I froze. Luckily, they didn’t come my way. Phew!
Curious (and maybe a little reckless), I lingered to take a photo… when suddenly, two ridiculously cute and tiny piglets shot out and disappeared into the forest. Several seconds later, another two dashed off. Then another two. Then two more. And finally, one last little straggler. All of them sprinted in different directions like they’d been launched from a cannon.
By the end of it, twelve wild boars had been right there — and I had unknowingly interrupted their siesta.
I’m so glad the mother didn’t feel like defending her kids. What a wild hair-raising encounter!

7月、滝場林道でとんでもないスリルを味わいました。
沢沿いの道を自転車でゆっくり登りながら、静けさに浸りつつ、どこかでキツツキがコツコツ木を叩く音を聞いていたその時――
ガサガサッ！
すぐ目の前で突然ものすごい音が！ 何事かと思った瞬間、なんと成獣2頭と大きめの子ども1頭のイノシシが枯れ枝をバキバキ鳴らしながら飛び出し、こちらとは反対方向へ全力疾走！
心臓バクバク。私は固まったまま見送るしかありませんでした。こっちに突っ込んでこなくて、本当に良かった……！
そして、好奇心（とほんの少しの無謀さ）に負けて、その場で写真を撮ろうとしていたところ――
今度はちっちゃくて反則級にかわいい瓜坊が2匹、ビューンと飛び出して森の奥へ消えていきました。数秒後、また2匹。さらに2匹。さらに2匹。そして最後にちょっと遅れてもう1匹。
まるで大砲から打ち出されたみたいに、みんなバラバラの方向へ全速力！
気づけばその場にいたのは合計12頭。私は完全にイノシシ一家のお昼寝タイムに乱入してしまったようです。
母イノシシが「子どもを守らねば！」と突進してこなくて、本当に助かりました。
いやぁ……あれは久々に毛穴が開くレベルの体験でした！

The Day The Forest Had Golden Eyes 森が金色の瞳を持った日
In August, I walked up Mt. Takigami. Just two minutes onto the trail, four birds swept silently past me in the forest, and one settled calmly on a branch within sight of me. I held my breath, quietly hoping it was an owl. Then its huge golden eyes met mine. My first wild owl sighting ever — a Brown Hawk Owl, or Aobazuku. A night hunter, casually showing up in broad daylight. What a memorable moment.
8月、滝上山を歩いていました。トレイルに入ってわずか2分で、4羽の鳥が森の中を静かに飛び過ぎ、そのうちの1羽が私の視界に入る枝に静かにとまりました。「フクロウだったらいいな」と息をのんで見守っていると──黄金色の大きな瞳がこちらをじっと見つめてきました。人生初の野生のフクロウ、アオバズク。夜行性のハンターが真昼間に現れるなんて。本当に特別な瞬間でした。
