旧中山道 The Old Nakasendo Road
I rode along the Old Nakasendo Road from Magome-Juku to Tsumago-Juku. To avoid disrupting people walking along the path, I left as early as I could. Luckily, I had it to myself most of the way. There were many people walking it when I returned to Magome-juku, but as I said before, I returned by prefecture route 7.
旧中山道を馬籠宿から妻籠宿まで走りました。道を歩いている人たちの邪魔にならないように、なるべく早朝に出発しました。運よく、ほとんど人に出会わずに済みました。馬籠宿に戻ると、多くの人が歩いていましたが、前に言ったように、県道7号線を使って帰りました。

There were bells for scaring away bears located along the path. Since I was traveling early in the morning when wild beasts are more active, I made good use of the bells. The cobblestone path added to the charm of the road. The cobblestone path above looks modern, but I came across an original section of cobblestone path later.

I sometimes come across 'ishizumi' (stone stacking) in Japan where people balance stones one on top of the other to make a stone tower. I wonder why people do this. Is it just a hobby? Or is it for religious purposes? Whatever the case, it often gives a mysterious aura to the places I find them.

The top of Magome pass (790 meters high). The slope on the Tsumago side is much longer, so the direction of Magome to Tsumago is much easier to walk. According to Goodle Earth, the kosatsuba in Magome is about 645m above sea level and the kosatsuba in Tsumago is 427m above sea level. That's a difference of over 200m. It definitely is much easier to ride from Magome to Tsumago.

Hmm! I'm not so sure about this! I'd argue that the whole journey from Magome to Tsumago was a power spot of happiness.

When I was passing the Ikkokutochi Tatebachaya Tea House the old guy was just opening it up. But I dropped in on my way back. 一石栃立場茶屋を過ぎたところ、おじいさんがちょうどお店を開けていました。 しかし、帰り道に寄ってみました。

Ikkokutochi, located between Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku, once boasted about seven households, but now only the Makino Family Residence remains. Dating back to the late Edo period, the Makino Family Residence was initially a large structure with a frontage width of about 19 meters, but it has since been reduced to about 14.5 meters with the southern side cut off.

The Tatebachaya tea house is quite interesting. The building is said to be around 250 years old. Inside there was a sunken hearth with smoke drifting up into the rafters. There was no chimney, so the rafters and roof frame were blackened from soot. The tea was free, but I found a donation box and contributed to this precious place. This place is well worth taking a rest at.

This is a machine for twisting straw rope and is said to have been invented in Saga Prefecture at the end of the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Straw is inserted through two trumpet-shaped receptacles, and after passing through a twisting device, the finished rope is wound up by a winder. It has a foot pedal for power.

Below is what was written on the information board for this tree. What I found amusing was that it said that you can make 300 bathtubs from this sawara cypress. I imagined a conversation describing a tree's size by how many bathtubs it could make.
A) How big do you reckon that tree is?

Kamoi-gi (Deity Dwelling Tree) The lower branches of this sawara tree rise up, forming a unique branch structure. Coniferous trees with branches shaped like this are called kamoi-gi (Deity dwelling trees).
It has long been believed that these trees are places where the mountain Deities (or tengu) rest. It was said that if you harmed or cut such a tree, you would immediately be cursed, and lumberjacks avoided passing under them. Trees like this one, with branches extending on both sides, are known as ryōkamoi (dual dwelling trees).

Odaki, The Male Waterfall. Medaki, The Female Waterfall was about 50 meters to the right of this one. 男滝。女滝は右50メートルくらいあります。
この滝は、木曽に街道が開かれて以来、旅人に名所としてしたしまれ、憩いの場であった。滝及び滝壺は、洪水や蛇抜けなどで高さや深さが減じているが、なお往時の姿をとどめている。
この滝には、滝壺に金の鶏が舞い込んだという倉科様伝説が伝わっている。また吉川英治 著『宮本武蔵』の舞台にもとりあげられている。
滝に向かって左が男滝、右が女滝である。滝周辺は険阻なため、道はしばしばつけかえられ、幕末頃までの中山道 は滝の下を通っていたものと思われる。現在滝上を通っている道が歴史の道である。
This waterfall has been cherished as a scenic spot and a place of relaxation for travelers since the Kiso Highway was opened. Although the height and depth of the waterfall and its basin have been reduced due to floods and landslides, they still retain their former appearance.
According to the Kurashina-sama legend, a golden rooster flew into the basin of this waterfall. Additionally, it is featured as a setting in Eiji Yoshikawa's novel "Miyamoto Musashi."
Facing the waterfall, the left side is the male waterfall and the right side is the female waterfall. Due to the rugged terrain around the waterfall, the path has often been rerouted, and it is believed that until the late Edo period, the Nakasendo Road passed below the waterfall. The current path above the waterfall is known as the Historical Path.

石の多い急な坂道を想い荷物を運ぶため黒牛が使用された。その黒牛の供養塔である。この中山道に祀られた唯一の石仏（多くは馬の供養塔である。）

Black oxen were used to carry loads along the steep, rocky paths. This is a memorial for those black oxen. It is the only stone Buddha enshrining them on this part of the Nakasendo Road. (Most memorials here are for horses).

Gyutou Kannon
Black oxen were used to carry loads along the steep, rocky paths. This is a memorial for those black oxen. It is the only stone Buddha enshrining them on this part of the Nakasendo Road. (Most memorials here are for horses).
Tsutamuraya Inn. I'd like to stay in an old traditional inn like this one day. I don't know when this one first opened for business, but the Maruya Inn, which is next to this one, opened for business in 1789.

This place has a sign outside saying 'hand-made soba (noodles)'. I guess it is a restaurant. But what caught my attention was the roof. I've never seen anything like it before. There are a lot of heavy rocks placed on it. Apparently, most houses in Tsumago used to have roofs like this. Smooth local river stones were used. The purpose was to weigh the roof down and prevent it from being blown away in strong winds. I wonder what would happen in a strong earthquake. There are a lot of very old buildings remaining in Tsumago, so this practice that was used for centuries, must be effective.

The rivers in in this part of Japan appear much different to the ones around where I live. They are a jumble of large smooth whitish boulders with crystal clear water that has a slight bluish or greenish tint. Suddenly, I feel like having a barbecue here.
