妻籠宿「中山道」 Tsumago-Juku, Nakasendo Samurai Road
After an enjoyable ride along the Old Nakasendo Road, I arrived in Tsumago, arguably the best-preserved post town in Japan. Tsumago was the 42nd post town along the Nakasendo Road, which was one of the 2 ancient highways that joined Edo (modern day Tokyo) to Kyoto. I read about the first Englishmen traveling on these highways at the beginning of the Edo Period. They wrote that for food, there was fish, pickles and a lot of cheese. What!? Cheese!? Obviously, what they thought was cheese was actually tofu. I found it amusing that they mistook tofu for cheese. Especially since my sister hates tofu but loves cheese. And I myself can't imagine enjoying tofu and wine, but I love cheese and wine. Actually, I'm enjoying a French red wine with a Danish mild blue cheese while I write this. Pure bliss!

A large straw horse welcomed me to Tsumago. 妻籠に到着したら、大きな藁馬が迎えてくれました。

Fortune smiled upon me. The warrior doll display for Children's Day was still on display in Tsumago. I've never seen a large display like this before.

There were some larger warrior dolls, as well. 大き目の武者人形もありました。
Another roof with large stones on it. This one was in the middle of Tsumago. You can clearly see the roof shingles in this photo. They look rather old. Sawara cypress or cedar was often used. Two large rocks are holding down each crosswise length of wood that are in turn holding down about 7 shingles. The crosswise length of wood and rocks are placed on every 3rd or 4th row. It's a very unique structure. I wonder what is below the split wood shingles. The main disadvantage with this style of roof is it's extremely flammable.

Tatsumiya Inn. It looks like it is just a historical landmark now. 'Tatsu' in the name means dragon and 'mi' means snake. However, On the sign under the 2nd floor eave I can see a snake and what looks like a crane or stork.

Gohei-mochi is a type of rice cake popular in the Chubu region of central Japan. It is coated with a sweet and savory tasting sauce and grilled over flames. This one's sauce included walnut, sesame and peanut and is hand made. This shape is called 'waraji' or 'traditional sandal shaped'.

I guess this is my breakfast. Itadakimasu~! The sauce it is coated in tasted really nice. I could taste a hint of peanut and other flavors in it. I really enjoyed my first gohei-mochi.

A traditional house that anyone could look inside of. The sunken hearth looks a bit close to the tatami mats for my liking. I thought there'd be a little more wood around the edge of it. There are various items on display that were used in the olden days.

Oh! I actually took a photo of the 235 year old Maruya Inn on my way back. There were suitcases waiting for pick up in the Entrance. Many guests have their luggage transported to Magome (or vice versa) while they walk the Nakasendo. The bamboo poles just under the eaves on the 2nd floor are used to air the futons.

There was a carpet of forget-me-not flowers in the grass as I left Tsumago. A fitting name for my experience here.
On a side note, this flower's name originates from a German legend where a knight fell into a river while picking some of these flowers for his love, and as he was swept away, he threw the bouquet to her and shouted, "forget me not". Thus, the flower symbolizes 'remembrance' and 'enduring love'.

In the video, you can see a double-bend in the road in Tsumago called a 'masugata'. 'Masugata' served as a strategic defense mechanism during the Edo period. It was designed to force the road to turn at two right angles, creating a blind spot that would obstruct and slow down any potential attacking forces. This architectural design ensured that attackers could not have a clear view along the entirety of the town's main street, thus providing a tactical advantage to the defenders. It also allowed better control and observation of incoming travelers.

Because I had my mountain bike, there were many places that I didn't enter to see. If I get a chance to visit Magome and Tsumago again, I'd like to explore everywhere at a leisurely pace without worrying about my bike. But the purpose of this trip was to ride the Old Nakasendo Road between Magome and Tsumago. It was a very interesting and enjoyable experience. From Magome I headed over to Iwamura Castle. My car navi created an adventure within an adventure by its choice of road to Iwamura. LOL!
