岩村城 Iwamura Castle
Iwamura Castle at an altitude of 717 meters was the highest mountain castle in Japan during the Edo Period. It was constructed in 1185 in a strategically important location. It's 700-year history of use is unprecedented in Japanese castle history. During the Warring States Period it was at the juncture of the Oda, Takeda and Tokugawa clans, all of whom had their sights set on domination of the country. Unfortunately, like many castles in Japan, the castle was deconstructed as ordered by the Haijo Edict (1873). However, many of the stone walls still remain, allowing you to feel the history as you walk up through the forest. Even though I was tired and hungry, I decided to explore the castle grounds first before heading into the castle town of Iwamura in search of food.

In 1610 the castle lord's residence was moved from the main keep to the foot of the mountain. Nowadays, this area is where the Iwamura History Museum is. The drum in this turret was used to signal the time to the residents of the castle town and also as a communication tool in times of danger, such as an enemy attack or a fire. There is a large free car park to the right of that turret.

In 1572, Akiyama Nobutomo, one of the 24 generals of Takeda Shingen, attacked the castle again, and Otsuya-no-Kata surrendered the castle and agreed to marry Nobutomo. She also sent Bomaru as a hostage to Takeda Shingen.

For example,in keeping with the tradition of the "Town of the Woman Lord," blue noren (short curtains) hanging from the eaves of each house bears the name of the woman who resides there.

This part of the cobblestone path is called Fujizaka (Wisteria Hill). It was hard work climbing up here due to my tired legs and empty gas tank, but well worth the effort. Iwamura Castle was built on steep terrain with a height difference of 180 meters. It's 800 meters from the castle entrance to the main keep.

Snake bones were stored in the treasure vault of the second bailey. There is a record which states that people dried snake bones for storing.

The main keep was located up there. The total length of the stone walls of Iwamura Castle is 1.7 km, and the number of stones used for the walls is approximately 40,000. The stone walls are located in 31 places.

Ooh! You can see Mt. Ontake (3,067m) in the distance from here. This mountain is the second highest volcano in Japan, after Mt. Fuji. I remember when it suddenly erupted in 2014 without any warning. 63 people were killed. It was a phreatic eruption, an explosive volcanic event caused by the rapid heating and expansion of groundwater into steam upon contact with magma or hot rocks.

After exploring the castle grounds, I went for a stroll in the castle town of Iwamura. This is the main street (Hondōri). Iwamura Castle Town is a culturally significant preservation district of historical buildings. As you can see, there are no power lines above ground and no utility poles.

It was 3 p.m. and I was starving. I saw a blue banner outside that said 'soba' so I poked my head into this shop. They were playing old songs on an old record player (which you can see down the back of the photo). I asked them if they had any food. They said they'd finished for the day. I must have looked disappointed, as the lady asked out the back if they could prepare some soba noodles for me. To my delight, they said 'yes'.

I don't like hot soba noodles, but I like cold ones. These tasted so good on my empty stomach. They gave me some mugwort (yomogi) tempura, too. It was the first time I'd tried mugwort tempura, so I was glad to be able to try something new, which is always a goal of mine when I travel.

The storehouse out the back of the Katsukawa House. The Katsukawa's were wealthy merchants, and you can enter their Edo Period residence for free. This storehouse was relocated from a spacious area of the Iwamura Castle grounds. It dates back to the Edo period and is called the "Four-Unit Storehouse," as it consists of four connected sections, each used to store different items. Additionally, the "Long Room Gate Storehouse" was used to store timber, making these types of storehouses extremely rare today. Traditional Japanese storehouses were made of thick (about 30cm) earthen walls with tile roofs. This provided excellent insulation and fire resistance. So, they were well suited for protecting valuable items, food and goods from fire, theft, and natural disasters.

The building is about 300 years old and still retains its original appearance from the Edo period. Iwamura Brewery was founded in 1787 (237 years ago). Natural soft water, which is very important in sake brewing, is drawn from a 400-year-old well in the courtyard. Their signature brand is called Onna Joshu (女城主) meaning 'Lady Lord of the Castle'. You can see a cask of this sake in the photo. Since I was driving, I couldn't sample the sake, so I just brought some as a souvenir. However, since I was hot, I enjoyed an amazake (sweet sake) soft cream. Since they also had a kids' size, I gathered that it didn't contain alcohol.

I was looking for a souvenir for the coffee shop I regularly go to in Miyazu. I entered Matsuuraken Main Store in Iwamura and was surprised to see castella cake. Confused, I asked the staff why castella was a famous product in this town in the mountains of central Japan. I thought castella was only famous in Nagasaki. The lady explained that in the Edo Period, a doctor from the Iwamura Domain went to study Dutch in Nagasaki and brought back the recipe for castella. She said that in those days, castella was considered good for illness. I thought this was an interesting story, so I bought one. It actually tasted really good.

I had no idea where I was going to stay for the night, but decided to head to Sekigahara, which I really wanted to visit. On the way there, I stopped at Utsutsutoge Parking Area and bought the 'pork and Chinese chive teppanyaki set meal' for dinner. Jackpot! It tasted unbelievably good.

Iwamura Castle and castle town were interesting. As usual, I found out a lot about the area and unique customs after I got home and wrote this blog. So, as was the case with Magome-Juku and Tsumago-Juku, I'd like to visit here again and explore everywhere at a leisurely pace. But, of course, there are also still many other places in Japan that I want to visit for the first time. In part 5, I explore Sekigahara. After having just watched the new Shogun series based on James Clavell's novel, I was really looking forward to visiting Sekigahara.
岩村城とその城下町は興味深いものでした。帰宅後、ブログを書くことでその地域や独自の習慣についてたくさん学びました。ですから、馬籠宿や妻籠宿と同様に、ゆっくりとしたペースで再訪して、再びあちこちを探索したいと思っています。もちろん、日本の他にも訪れたい場所がまだまだたくさんあります。「その5」では関ヶ原を探索します。ジェームズ・クラベルの小説に基づいた新しい『将軍』シリーズを見た直後で、関ヶ原を訪れることをとても楽しみにしていました。
