日置から成相山へ

Today's route - Amanohashidate → Hioki → Shoryu Falls → Mt. Nariai Panorama Lookout → Nariai-ji Temple → Fuchuu
While enjoying spring flowers etc, we rode from Hioki (Miyazu City) to Mt. Nariai Panorama Lookout. From there we saw the stunning views of Amanohashidate, Miyazu Bay, Kunda Peninsula, Wakasa Bay etc. On the way down, we stopped by Nariai-ji Temple

春の花々などを楽しみながら、宮津市日置から成相山パノラマ展望台までマウンテンバイクで走りました。展望台からは、天橋立、宮津湾、栗田半島、若狭湾などの素晴らしい景色を一望できました。下り道では、成相寺にも立ち寄りました。

Magnolia コブシ（辛夷）

春の田舎風景が本当にきれい。 Rural Japan in spring is really beautiful

白い花を枝いっぱいに咲かせ、まだ冬枯れの山野にいち早く春の訪れを知らせます。
コブシは春先の頃、葉が出る前の枝に白い花が華やぐように咲き、爽やかな香りを漂わせる花木です。秋になるとたくさんの果実が集まった集合果を実らせ、その姿がごつごつとした握りこぶしのように見えるため、「コブシ」の名前がつけられたようです。
地方によっては、コブシの開花を農作業開始の目安にしていたため、「田打ち桜」という別名があり、「コブシの花が多い年は豊作、少なければ凶作」などのことわざもあるとか。農家の人にはとても大切な木のようですね。また、鑑賞はもちろん木材や漢方などにも利用されるなど、多くの人に身近に親しまれてきた木です。

Branches covered in striking white blossoms announce the arrival of spring, even as the mountains and fields remain cloaked in the desolation of winter.
The kobushi magnolia is a flowering tree that blooms in early spring, its white petals appearing before any leaves emerge. The flowers release a refreshing fragrance, signaling the change of seasons.
In autumn, the tree bears knobby, clustered fruit that resembles a clenched fist—believed to be the origin of its Japanese name, kobushi (“fist”).
In some regions, the blooming of kobushi magnolias traditionally marked the beginning of the farming season. For this reason, it is also known as ta-uchi zakura, or “field-plowing cherry tree.” A local proverb says: “A year with many kobushi flowers brings a good harvest; a year with few, a poor one.”
Deeply tied to rural life, the kobushi magnolia has long been cherished—not only by farmers, but also for its timber and use in traditional Chinese medicine.

Turn left at Kongoshin-in Temple and head toward Hata.

昇龍の滝 Shoryu Waterfall 夏に入りたいなぁ I want to get under it in summer

The statue on the left is likely Kannon Bosatsu, the goddess of mercy and compassion, and the one on the right appears to be Fudo Myoo, the fierce protector. 左側の仏像はおそらく慈悲と慈愛の女神である観音菩薩で、右側の仏像は猛々しい守護神、不動明王のようです。

この場所の歴史に興味があります。ご存知の方がいたら教えてください。I want to know the history of this place. Please tell me.

Shoryu Falls is said to be a place where monks who came to train at Nariai-ji Temple practiced waterfall meditation. I’m not exactly sure when that was.
昇龍の滝は、成相寺に修行に来たお坊さんたちが滝行をした場所だそうです。正確な時期はわかりませんが。

新しい単語「ガレチ」を教えてもらいました。　I learned a new word: garechi — a rough, rocky trail.

ここから伊根町が遠くに見えます。I can see Ine Town in the distance from here.

First view of Amanohashidate. Not many people get to see it from this angle. Central Miyazu is across the bay. Kasamatsu Park can be seen on the ridge to the lower left.最初の天橋立の眺め。ここからこの景色を見る人はあまりいないと思います。宮津市は湾の向こう側にあります。左下の尾根の上には笠松公園が見えます。

先週末に登った由良ヶ岳。宮津市って本当に素晴らしいところですよね。Mt. Yuragadake, which we climbed last weekend. Miyazu is a fantastic place, aye.

成相寺 - 西国三十三観音28番の札所等

成相寺は天橋立を望む成相山の中腹にあり、元々は日本古来の山岳宗教の修験場でした。日本全国にある五つの「聖の住む所」の一つとして信仰を集めてまいりました。その中で文武天皇の勅願所として慶雲元（704）年に真応上人が創建したと伝えられています。悲話を伝える撞かずの鐘、奇怪な話の底なし池、美人観音として名高い聖観世音菩薩などがあり、しゃくなげの名所でもあります。

Nariai-ji Temple is located midway up Mt. Nariai overlooking Amanohashidate. Originally, it was a training site for the ancient Japanese mountain ascetic religion (shugendo). It has been revered as one of the five “holy places where saints dwell” across Japan. According to tradition, it was founded in 704 (Keiun 1) by the monk Shin’o at the imperial request of Emperor Monmu. The temple is known for its “Tsukamazu no Kane” (the Bell That Must Not Be Struck), a tragic story; the eerie Bottomless Pond; the famous statue of the Beautiful Kannon (Shō-Kannon Bosatsu); and it is also renowned as a scenic spot for rhododendrons.
