馬籠宿「中山道」 Magome-Juku, Nakasendo Samurai Road
A trip to explore Japan's history in the era of the samurai. I left home just before 10 p.m. and arrived at Magome-Juku in Gifu Prefecture at around 2:20 a.m. Magome-juku was the 43rd post town on the ancient highway known as 'Nakasendo' in Japanese or 'Samurai Road' by many foreigners. In the Edo Period, post towns provided essential services for travelers, including lodging, food, horses, and porters. Magome-Juku is one of the best preserved post towns in Japan.

All the car parks I saw in Magome-juku were free. The starry sky here was the best I've seen since coming to Japan. But at 9℃ outside, I quickly crawled into my futon and had a good sleep in this quiet mountain village. I got up early to avoid the crowds and was met with a beautiful view of Mt. Ena (2,191m).
馬籠宿で見た駐車場は、どこも無料でした。ここでの星空は、今まで日本で見た中で一番綺麗でした。でも、外は気温９度だったので、すぐに布団に潜り込んで、静かな山里でぐっすり眠りました。人混みを避けるために早起きをしたところ、恵那山 (2,191m) の美しい景色が広がっていました。

My plan was to ride my mountain bike along the old Nakasendo from Magome-Juku, over the mountain pass, down to Tsumago-Juku and to use route 7 on the return trip . It's about 8 km one way. Magome-Juku was beautifully preserved as you can see in the photos. There were no utility poles, power lines, antennas or cars.

There were several working waterwheels on the side of the road. The historical use of waterwheels was to grind grains into flour. But now they are used for micro hydropower (lighting) and to add to the charm of the town.
道の傍らにはいくつか水車が稼働していました。水車は昔は穀物を粉にするために使われていました。ですが今はマイクロ水力発電（照明）や町並みの魅力を高めるために使われています。

高札場 Kōsatsuba
Kōsatsuba were public notice boards used in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868) to display official announcements and regulations issued by the shogunate or local feudal lords. They served as a crucial communication tool for disseminating information to the general public.

I can see the word 'bugyo'「奉行 」 meaning 'magistrate'. 「奉行」の文字が見えますね。
