「馬が酔う」って！？

3月に週末の天気が不安定でした。なかなか山へ行けませんでした。しかし、行ったときに面白い植物を発見しました。土曜日に黄砂が通り過ぎた後、もう一回あの山を上りました。
The weather was very changeable every weekend in March. I didn't get much or a chance to go into the mountains. But when I finally did go, I came upon an interesting plant. On Saturday, after the yellow sand had blown over, I went up that mountain again.

山の中にこの小さい鐘形の花を見ました。低木に生えていました。私がよく行く喫茶店でおじいさんの常連の客さん（私の生き字引）にこの花の話をしました。写真を見ずにそのおじいさんが「アセビ」と言いました。アセビ（アシビも言います）の漢字は馬酔木です。面白いですね。そのおじいさんは「葉が毒で、馬が食べたら酔います」と言いました。人と動物にとっては葉が毒です。花蜜も毒だと私は読みました。そのおじいさんは「昔の人は葉を水に入れて沸かしました。そして、それを頭に付けた。」と言いました。さあ！今日の謎ですが．．．昔の人は何のためにそれをしたでしょうか。答えは下記にあります。

I saw these small bell-shaped flowers on a shrub in the mountains. I mentioned them to my 'living encyclopedia' (an old man who is a regular customer) at the coffee shop I often go to. Without even seeing a photo he identified them as the flowers of the 'Japanese Andromeda' also know as the 'Dwarf Lily-of-the-Valley' shrub. In Japanese, they are called 'asebi' or 'ashibi' and the Chinese characters are 馬酔木 (meaning 'Drunken Horse Tree'). He said the leaves are poisonous (for animals and humans), and I also read that the flowers' nectar contains poison too. He then told me a story about the old days, when people used to boil the (poisonous) leaves in water, and then apply that to their heads. So, today's puzzle is, 'Why do you think they did this?' The answer is below.
