滝の千年ツバキ 1,000 Year Old Camellia of Taki

先週、鬼の岩屋から行ったことがない谷を見ました。今日はあの辺を探検します。谷の右側の山に林道がありそうです。それも探検したいです。 Last week, from Oni-no-Iwaya (Ogre Cave) I saw a valley that I'd never been up. I'm going to explore it today It looks like there is a forest road on the right hand side of the valley. I want to explore there too

最近、雨がよく降っているので川の水かさが上がっています。 The river is high due to recent rain.

これがここにありますか。聞いたことがあります。では、これを見に行きます。右の山ではなく、左の山に入ります。 A 1,000 year old camellia tree is here. I've heard of it before. Okay!!! I'll go and check it out, so instead of going into the mountains on the right, I go into the ones on the left.

左に行きます。（家に帰った後、調べて、この山の中に林道がいくつかあるようです。次回、右の道を探検したいと思います。） Keep left here. (After I got home, I checked out these mountains and it seems there a few forest roads here. Next time I'll explore the right road.)

昔の田圃と家があった場所が林になりました。 Rice fields & house locations from long ago are now forest

There used to be a small village up here consisting of 6 households. While battling the severe weather & nature, they made a living in forestry and agriculture. By 1971, the last of the households had moved out, down into the town of Kaya.

滝の千年ツバキ保全・保護工事について
　今回の保全保護工事は、平成七年の春、ツバキ主幹部、根本付近に、地際から幅約二㎝・長さ約八〇㎝の縦型クラック（亀裂）が生じているのが発見されたため、樹木医の診断に基づき損傷の拡大を防止する工事として実施しました。
　具体的な工法ととしましては、クラックの生じている主幹部の荷重をできるだけ軽減するための支柱工法、ブレーシング工法としてクラック部への薬剤散布、パテ埋めによる治療工事で、特に支柱工事では、東西南北の枝張りに合わせ、その地下部に巨樹を支える根が縦横無尽に張り巡っているため、その根を傷付けないように細心の注意をはらい平成八年三月に完了しました。
　今回の保全保護工事では、できる限り周囲の景観に配慮いたしましたが、従来の景観と若干の差異が生じたことにご不満をもたれる方も少なくないと思われます。しかし、この『滝の千年ツバキ』は、世界に一本しかない貴重なツバキの巨樹であり、二度と人工的に作られるものではありません。
　今回の工法は、千年ツバキを守り続けていくための最良の方法であり、椿愛好家の皆さんの温かいご理解をお願いするところです。
　今後とも、この『滝の千年ツバキ』を末ながく見守っていただきたいとともに、さらに皆さんに親しんでいただきますようご協力をよろしくお願いいたします。

カメムシ Stinkbug .... These come inside in late autumn. Everyone says that if there are a lot in autumn, then there will be a lot of snow in winter. But I think this is just an old wives tale.

この上に滝があるかな。まあ！林道があるから探検をしに行きたいです。 I guess there is a waterfall up there. Well, since there is a forest road, I'll go and explore.

木が最近に倒れました。ゴロゴロ！！！雷が聞こえます。やばい！！！雨が降りそうです。帰ります。また来て探検したいです。 This tree has fallen just recently. I can hear the rumble of thunder. Oh no!!! Looks like it's going to rain. Time to head back. I'll come back and explore here another day.
