After Oboke Gorge, I headed over the mountain pass to the Iya Valley, one of the most Isolated places in Japan. ​大歩危峡から峠を越えて、日本で最も孤立した場所の一つである祖谷渓に向かいました。

でこまわし　Deko Mawashi

'Deko Mawashi'. This is a traditional Iya Valley dish consisting of konyaku, tofu, a dense local potato and a buckwheat dumpling on a skewer, slathered with miso and grilled around hot coals. It is called 'deko mawashi' because rotating (mawashi) the skewers while grilling them gives them the appearance of 'deko' dolls.
でこまわしは祖谷地方の郷土料理で、ごうしいも（じゃがいも）、豆腐、こんにゃく、そば団子を竹串に刺し、みそだれをつけて炭火で焼く田楽です。回しながら焼く様子が「でこ（人形）」に似ているので、この名が付きました。

かずら橋　Kazurabashi

日本三奇橋にも数えられる祖谷のかずら橋。何で皆があんな風に歩き渡っているでしょうか。(ビデオをご覧ください）

だから皆があんな風に歩き渡った。なるほど！私の大足には余裕でしたが。So that's why they were crossing the bridge like that. That makes sense! It was no problem for my big feet though.

祖谷渓　Iya Valley Gorge

ひの字渓谷　Hi-no-Ji Valley

At this spot, the Iya River winds through the valley in a 'V' shape which looks like the Japanese letter ひ 「hi」(pronounced 'he'), so it is sometimes called 'Hi-no-Ji' Valley.
ここから見えるポイントは祖谷川が蛇行し、ひらがなの「ひ」の字に見えることから、​通称「ひの字渓谷」とも言われています。

祖谷渓小便小僧　Iya Valley Peeing Boy Statue

The Statue of the Peeing Boy. According to legend, local boys and travelers used to pee off here to show their bravery. According to Google Earth, it is about a 150 meter drop to river.
祖谷渓小便小僧。その昔、地元の少年や旅人たちはここで小便をして、度胸だめしをしたという伝説があります。グーグルアースによると、川まで約150メートルの落差がある。
