2. 登山　The Ascent

The first stretch of the trail looked like a classic example of an ancient hollow way. Over centuries, countless footsteps compacted the ground, each one loosening tiny amounts of soil while gradually pressing the path deeper into the forest floor. Heavy rains did the rest, turning the trail into a temporary stream where rushing water carried away the loosened earth and slowly carved the trench even deeper. Along the sides, gnarled tree roots now serve as natural retaining walls, holding the surrounding soil in place.
When hiking along ancient trails over mountain passes or up to mountain castle ruins, I sometimes come across paths like this. The deeper the trench, the more intrigued I become by the countless travelers who passed this way and the centuries of history beneath my feet.

登山道の最初の区間は、長い年月をかけて掘り下がった古道そのものといった趣があった。何世紀もの間、数え切れないほどの人々が歩き続けたことで地面は踏み固められ、一歩ごとにわずかな土が削られ、道は少しずつ森の地面より低い位置へと沈み込んでいった。そして、大雨が追い打ちをかける。雨水は登山道を一時的な水路へと変え、勢いよく流れる水が削られた土を運び去り、溝はさらに深く刻まれていった。
道の両側では、ねじれた木の根が天然の土留めとなり、周囲の土をしっかりと支えている。峠へと続く古道や山城跡へ向かう古道では、ときどきこのような道に出会うことがある。道が深く掘り込まれていればいるほど、この道を歩いてきた数え切れないほどの人々や、その長い歴史に思いを巡らせずにはいられない。

It's unusual for me to enter the mountains without seeing or hearing deer, and Mt. Aoba was no exception. Their calls echoed through the forest, and the hiker behind me even started shouting, perhaps thinking something more dangerous was nearby. Fortunately, the noisy residents were only deer.
I, on the other hand, have nothing to fear from does. Much to my constant disappointment, they almost always bolt the moment they spot me. That's what made this fleeting glance over her shoulder such a satisfying photo to capture.

山へ入ってシカを見たり鳴き声を聞いたりしないことは、私にとってほとんどない。もちろん青葉山も例外ではなく、森のあちこちから鳴き声が響いていた。そのせいか、後ろを歩いていた登山者は、ときどき大声を出して存在を知らせていた。もっと危険な動物が近くにいると思ったのかもしれない。幸い、騒がしい住人の正体はシカだった。
一方の私は、メスジカなんて少しも怖くない。 残念なことに、こちらの姿を見つけた瞬間、一目散に逃げてしまう。それだけに、この一瞬だけ振り返ってくれた姿を写真に収められたのは、とても嬉しかった。

Whoa! What on earth is that wasp? It looks like it has an incredibly long tail! At least, that was my first reaction when I spotted this strange-looking insect.
It's actually called an Oohoshi-onagabachi, a fascinating species of parasitoid wasp. The female carries an extraordinarily long ovipositor (egg-laying tube). No, it's not a terrifyingly long stinger, as you could easily be forgiven for thinking at first glance. Despite its fearsome appearance, this wasp is completely harmless to humans.
Here's the truly amazing part. Using her antennae, the female detects the larvae of woodwasps or longhorn beetles hidden deep inside dead or dying trees. Once she has pinpointed the larva's exact location, she drills her ovipositor through the wood and deposits an egg directly into, or beside, the unsuspecting host. When the egg hatches, the young wasp slowly feeds on the host larva as it grows.
Nature never ceases to amaze me.

うわっ！ なんだ、このハチ!? まるで、とてつもなく長いしっぽが生えているように見える。少なくとも、これを見つけたときの私の第一印象はそんな感じだった。
このハチはオオホシオナガバチという寄生バチの一種。特に驚くのは、メスが持つ非常に長い産卵管だ。初めて見ると「ものすごく長い針だ！」と思ってしまっても無理はない。でも安心してほしい。見た目は迫力満点だが、人に危害を加えることはない。
そして、本当に驚かされるのはここからだ。メスは触角を使って、枯れ木や弱った木の内部に潜むキバチ類の幼虫やカミキリムシの幼虫を探し出す。獲物の位置を正確に突き止めると、長い産卵管を木の中へと貫通させ、幼虫の体内、あるいはすぐ近くに卵を産み付ける。やがて卵からかえった幼虫は、宿主となった幼虫を少しずつ食べながら成長していく。
自然の世界には、驚きが尽きない。

The trail more or less zigzags straight up the mountainside from Matsuo-dera Temple to the West Peak. Much of it is covered in exposed tree roots, creating what feels like a natural staircase. The combination of the steep slope, centuries of foot traffic, and the heavy rainfall typical of western Japan has gradually washed away the surrounding soil, leaving the roots exposed. The result is a rugged, ancient-looking landscape that makes the climb all the more enjoyable.

登山道は松尾寺から西峰へ向かって、急斜面をジグザグに登りながらも、ほぼ一直線に山を登っていく。道の多くは露出した木の根に覆われ、まるで天然の階段のようだ。急な斜面に加え、何世紀にもわたる人々の往来と西日本特有の多雨によって土が少しずつ流され、地中にあった木の根が姿を現したのだろう。その結果、荒々しくも古の趣を感じさせる風景が生まれ、登る楽しさをいっそう引き立ててくれる。

​One of the things I enjoy most about wandering the mountains of Japan is discovering unusual organisms and trying to identify them. But these strange white, foam-like masses have me completely stumped. I spotted around ten of them scattered throughout the same area. Were they produced by an insect? Are they some kind of fungus? They appeared to be firmly attached to exposed roots or branches rather than bubbling out of them. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears!

日本の山を歩く楽しみの一つは、見慣れない生き物に出会い、その正体を調べることだ。しかし、この白い泡のような塊だけは、まったく見当がつかない。同じ場所で10個ほど見かけたのだが、これは昆虫が作ったものなのだろうか。それとも菌類の仲間なのだろうか。木の根や枝から湧き出しているというよりは、しっかりと貼り付いているように見えた。もし何か心当たりがあれば、ぜひ教えてほしい。

Many of the steeper sections are fitted with fixed ropes to help hikers keep their footing. They add a welcome sense of adventure to an already enjoyable climb.

急な登りには、足元を支えるための固定ロープが設置されている。こうした設備のおかげで、安心して登れるだけでなく、登山にちょっとした冒険気分も添えてくれる。

As you near the summit, the trail becomes even steeper. One of the most iconic sights on the climb up Mt. Aoba is this metal ladder which, together with the exposed roots and fixed ropes, adds yet another sense of adventure to the ascent. The handrails are surprisingly low, so they weren't much help to someone my height. With a little concentration, I managed to climb it while staying upright.

山頂が近づくにつれ、登山道はさらに急になっていく。青葉山の登山でよく紹介される名物の一つが、この金属製のはしごだ。露出した木の根や固定ロープに続き、このはしごが登山にさらなる冒険気分を添えてくれる。
ただ、手すりの位置は意外と低く、私のような長身にはあまり役に立たなかった。それでも少し慎重に足を運べば、立ったまま問題なく登ることができた。

ワンポイント・レッスン

be stumped
意味： お手上げである、さっぱり分からない、どうしていいか分からない

stump は「切り株」という意味もありますが、be stumped は「難しすぎて答えが分からない」「完全に行き詰まる」という意味のイディオムです。

直訳すると「私は耳だけです！」ですが、もちろんそんな意味ではありません。相手の話を「興味を持って聞いています」「ぜひ教えてください」という気持ちを表す、とてもよく使われるイディオムです。

keep one's footing
意味： 足元をしっかり保つ／足を滑らせないようにする／バランスを保つ

footing は「足場・足元」という意味です。keep your footing は、滑りやすい場所や急な坂などで転ばないようにしっかり歩くという意味でよく使われます。
