3. 西峰　West Peak

Just before reaching the West Peak stands the Okunoin (Inner Sanctuary) of Matsuo-dera, known as Aoba-san Myōri Daigongen. A short flight of weathered stone steps leads to a small shrine protected by a metal cage beside an old stone lantern. The substantial stone platform suggests this was once a far more important place of worship.
During the Meiji period, the buildings that once stood here were destroyed during a dispute between the nearby villages of Matsuo and Imadera following the separation of Buddhism and Shinto. According to local tradition, the people of Imadera later rebuilt a hall at the site. Today, the quiet shrine is all that remains before the final few minutes to the West Peak.

​西峰まではあとわずかという場所に、松尾寺の奥の院である青葉山妙理大権現があります。風格のある石段を上ると、古い石灯籠の横に、小さな祠が金属製の囲いに守られています。祠がこのように保護されているのを見たのは初めてでした。しっかりと築かれた石積みを見ると、ここがかつて重要な信仰の場だったことがうかがえます。
明治時代の神仏分離に伴い、この場所に建っていた堂宇は、松尾と今寺の両地区による争いの中で失われました。地元に伝わる話によると、その後、今寺の人々によって堂が再建されたといわれています。長い歴史を物語るこの静かな祠を後にすると、西峰の山頂まではあと数分です。

The trees suddenly gave way to an expansive view. Looking south from the West Peak, Takahama lay to my left and Maizuru to my right. The forested ridge between the two valleys marks today's border between Fukui and Kyoto. For centuries, however, these lands were known as the provinces of Wakasa and Tango, and Mt. Aoba has stood watch over their frontier throughout history.

木々が途切れると、一気に視界が開けました。西峰から南を望むと、左には高浜町、右には舞鶴市が広がっています。二つの谷の間に続く緑豊かな尾根は、現在の福井県と京都府の県境です。しかし、かつてこの地は若狭国と丹後国と呼ばれ、青葉山は長い歴史の中で、その国境を静かに見守り続けてきました。

Zooming in on Maizuru, I could clearly make out the city's naval base, with four large warships moored in port. Maizuru has been one of Japan's most important naval ports for well over a century and remains home to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Maizuru District Headquarters. It is said that members of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force sometimes use Mt. Aoba for endurance training, and its challenging terrain is indeed an ideal training ground.

​舞鶴市街を拡大してみると、港には4隻の大きな艦艇が停泊する海上自衛隊舞鶴基地がはっきりと見えました。舞鶴は100年以上にわたり日本を代表する軍港の一つとして発展し、現在も海上自衛隊舞鶴地方総監部が置かれています。急な登りが続く青葉山は、海上自衛隊員が持久力訓練に利用することもあると言われており、その厳しい地形はまさに格好の訓練場所なのでしょう。

​Reaching the true summit of the West Peak requires one final challenge. A short ladder and a sturdy chain help hikers scramble up the rocky outcrop behind the shrine. It's not difficult, but it adds just enough excitement to make reaching the top even more rewarding.

西峰の本当の山頂に立つには、最後にもうひと頑張りが必要です。祠の裏にある岩場は、短いはしごと丈夫な鎖を使って登ります。難しい場所ではありませんが、ちょっとしたスリルが加わることで、山頂にたどり着いたときの達成感もひとしおです。

After climbing the chain, there was one final obstacle to overcome. A narrow ledge, protected by a sturdy handrail, leads around the rock to the summit. It looks more intimidating than it really is, but it adds one last touch of adventure before reaching the top.

鎖を登り切っても、山頂まではあとひとつ難関が残っています。頑丈な手すりが設けられた細い岩棚の道を進むと、山頂にたどり着きます。一見すると少し怖そうですが、実際にはそれほど難しくはなく、最後にちょっとした冒険気分を味わわせてくれます。

The final climb was well worth the effort. From the 692-metre summit of the West Peak, Uchiura Bay stretches out below, opening into the vast waters of Wakasa Bay beyond. After climbing through the forest, scrambling over the rocks, and carefully making my way along the narrow ledge, I was rewarded with this breathtaking panorama.

最後のひと登りは、その苦労に十分見合うものでした。標高692メートルの西峰山頂からは、眼下に内浦湾が広がり、その先には雄大な若狭湾が続いています。森の中を歩き、岩場をよじ登り、細い岩棚を慎重に進んだ先で、この息をのむような絶景が待っていました。

Beside the summit shrine stood a lichen-covered, weathered stone monument resting on a large rock where I stopped to eat my lunch. Its worn kanji were carved into the flat top, their strokes faded by countless seasons of wind and rain. Assuming it was an ancient relic connected with the shrine, I took a photograph before continuing on my way.
When I got home, I put on my detective hat and began trying to decipher the inscription. Little by little, the characters started to reveal themselves and following one clue after another, I was surprised to find that I could read the entire inscription.

It reads:

So, this monument has stood on the summit for almost a century.

Shaped rather like a giant stone drum, it measures at least 30 cm across and about 40 cm high. If it is carved from granite, or a similarly dense stone, it probably weighs well over 50 kilograms. I imagine it was crafted by a skilled stonemason before being hauled up the mountain by members of the newly founded club. Standing beside it, it's hard not to picture those climbers struggling up the old pilgrimage trail with such a heavy burden, determined to leave a lasting mark on the mountain on their special day.
One mystery solved... and many more created. What became of the Maizuru Mountaineering Club? Did they continue climbing Mt. Aoba for decades, or did the club quietly disappear into history? Perhaps the answers will never be known.

山頂の祠のそばに、私が昼食をとった大きな岩の上へ、地衣類に覆われた風化した石のモニュメントが静かに佇んでいた。平らな上面には漢字が刻まれていたが、その線は幾度となく繰り返された風雨によって薄れ、多くの文字は判読が難しくなっていた。私はそれを祠に関係する古い遺物だと思い込み、その場を後にする前に写真を撮っておいた。
家に帰ると、私は「探偵モード」に入り、その碑文の解読に挑戦した。少しずつ文字の正体が見え始め、一つ手がかりを見つけるたびに次の手がかりへとたどり着いていった。そして最後には、自分でも驚いたことに、碑文の全文を読み解くことができた。

そこに刻まれていたのは、次の文字だった。

つまり、このモニュメントは山頂に建てられてから、まもなく100年を迎えようとしている。

​その形はまるで巨大な石の太鼓のようで、直径は少なくとも30センチ、高さは約40センチほどある。もし花崗岩、あるいはそれに近い密度の高い石でできているのなら、重量は50キログラムをはるかに超えるはずだ。おそらく熟練した石工によって作られ、その後、創立したばかりの山岳会の会員たちによって山頂まで運び上げられたのだろう。
その場に立っていると、重い石を担ぎながら古い参道を懸命に登っていく当時の登山者たちの姿を思い描かずにはいられない。創立という特別な日に、この山へ自分たちの足跡を残そうとしていたのだ。
一つの謎が解けると、さらに多くの謎が生まれた。
舞鶴山岳会は、その後どうなったのだろうか。彼らは何十年にもわたって青葉山へ登り続けたのか。それとも、静かに歴史の中へ消えていったのか。
もしかすると、その答えは永遠に分からないのかもしれない。

This is the route I took from Matsuo-dera Temple to the West Peak of Mt. Aoba. As you can see, it makes almost a beeline straight up the mountainside, zigzagging back and forth through the forest. It took me 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach the summit, allowing plenty of time to stop and take photographs along the way. The descent back to the temple by the same route took just 50 minutes.
The western route that I climbed is generally considered the more challenging ascent. The eastern route from Takahama is said to be easier, so next time I'd like to approach the mountain from that side. That should leave me with enough gas in the tank to explore the rugged ridge connecting the East Peak and the West Peak, which looks like a lot of fun.
I wonder what mysteries await me there.

In Chapter 4, I'll introduce a legend associated with Mt. Aoba that is even older than the temples and shrines themselves.

こちらが、松尾寺から青葉山西峰まで私が歩いたルートです。ご覧のとおり、登山道は山腹をジグザグに折り返しながら、ほぼ一直線に山頂を目指して登っていきます。途中で何度も立ち止まって写真を撮りながら歩いたため、山頂までは約1時間20分かかりました。下山は同じルートを通り、約50分でした。
私が登った西側ルートは、一般的に東側の高浜町から登るルートよりも難しいと言われています。次回は高浜側から登り、体力に余裕を残した状態で東峰と西峰を結ぶ岩稜歩きにも挑戦してみたいと思っています。
そこで私は、どんな新しい謎と出会うのでしょうか。

stand watch over は「見張る」「警備する」という意味から発展し、長い間、ある場所や人を静かに見守り続けるというニュアンスで使われます。山や城、灯台など、長い歴史を持つものを擬人化して表現するときによく使われます。
