I arrived in Sekigahara just after dark. The gasoline here was much cheaper than around where I live. There were swarms of insects around the gas station's lights. While filling up my car I felt an insect land on my head. As soon as I brushed it away, I smelt that dreaded stink bug smell emanating from my head. Noooooo! You gotta be kidding me! Sporting my new perfume, I went to find a place to park up for the night.
夕方暗くなってから関ヶ原に到着しました。ここでは、私の住んでいる地域よりもガソリンがずっと安かったです。ガソリンスタンドの灯りには、無数の虫が群がっていました。給油中に頭に虫が止まるのを感じ、それを払いのけた途端、頭からあの嫌なカメムシの匂いが漂ってきました。うっそおおおお！信じられない！独特の香りを漂わせ、夜を過ごす場所を探しに行きました。

Iwamura Castle at an altitude of 717 meters was the highest mountain castle in Japan during the Edo Period. It was constructed in 1185 in a strategically important location. It's 700-year history of use is unprecedented in Japanese castle history.  During the Warring States Period it was at the juncture of the Oda, Takeda and Tokugawa clans, all of whom had their sights set on domination of the country. Unfortunately, like many castles in Japan, the castle was deconstructed as ordered by the Haijo Edict (1873). However, many of the stone walls still remain, allowing you to feel the history as you walk up through the forest. Even though I was tired and hungry, I decided to explore the castle grounds first before heading into the castle town of Iwamura in search of food.
717メートルの標高にある岩村城は、江戸時代には日本で最も高い山城でした。この城は1185年に戦略的に重要な場所に建設され、その700年間にわたる使用の歴史は日本の城の中でも前例がありません。​戦国時代には、天下を目指す織田・武田・徳川の接点に位置していまた。残念ながら、多くの日本の城と同様に、岩村城も1873年の廃城令により解体されました。しかし、石垣の多くは今も残っており、森の中を登りながら歴史を感じることができます。疲れて空腹でしたが、まずは城跡を探索してから、食事を求めて岩村の城下町へ向かうことにしました。

After an enjoyable ride along the Old Nakasendo Road, I arrived in Tsumago, arguably the best-preserved post town in Japan. Tsumago was the 42nd post town along the Nakasendo Road, which was one of the 2 ancient highways that joined Edo (modern day Tokyo) to Kyoto. I read about the first Englishmen traveling on these highways at the beginning of the Edo Period. They wrote that for food, there was fish, pickles and a lot of cheese. What!? Cheese!? Obviously, what they thought was cheese was actually tofu. I found it amusing that they mistook tofu for cheese. Especially since my sister hates tofu but loves cheese. And I myself can't imagine enjoying tofu and wine, but I love cheese and wine. Actually, I'm enjoying a French red wine with a Danish mild blue cheese while I write this. Pure bliss!
旧中山道を楽しく走った後、妻籠に到着しました。ここは日本で最も保存状態の良い宿場町と言っても過言ではありません。妻籠は中山道の42番目の宿場町で、江戸（現在の東京）と京都を結ぶ二つの街道の一つでした。江戸時代初期にこれらの街道を旅した最初のイギリス人について読んだことがあります。彼らは、食べ物として魚や漬物、そしてたくさんのチーズがあったと書いていました。何！？チーズ！？明らかに、彼らがチーズだと思ったものは実際には豆腐でした。彼らが豆腐をチーズと間違えたことが面白いと感じました。特に、私の妹は豆腐が嫌いですが、チーズが大好きなので。そして私自身、豆腐とワインを楽しむなんて想像できませんが、チーズとワインは大好きです。​実は、今、デンマーク産のマイルドブルーチーズとフランス産の赤ワインを楽しみながらこれを書いています。​これぞ幸せ！

I rode along the Old Nakasendo Road from Magome-Juku to Tsumago-Juku. To avoid disrupting people walking along the path, I left as early as I could. Luckily, I had it to myself most of the way. There were many people walking it when I returned to Magome-juku, but as I said before, I returned by prefecture route 7.
旧中山道を馬籠宿から妻籠宿まで走りました。道を歩いている人たちの邪魔にならないように、なるべく早朝に出発しました。運よく、ほとんど人に出会わずに済みました。馬籠宿に戻ると、多くの人が歩いていましたが、前に言ったように、県道7号線を使って帰りました。

A trip to explore Japan's history in the era of the samurai. I left home just before 10 p.m. and arrived at Magome-Juku in Gifu Prefecture at around 2:20 a.m. Magome-juku was the 43rd post town on the ancient highway known as 'Nakasendo' in Japanese or 'Samurai Road' by many foreigners. In the Edo Period, post towns ​provided essential services for travelers, including lodging, food, horses, and porters. Magome-Juku is one of the best preserved post towns in Japan.
侍の時代の日本歴史を探る旅。夜10時前に出発し、岐阜県にある馬籠宿には午前2時20分頃に到着しました。馬籠宿は、日本では「中山道（なかせんどう）」、多くの外国人には「サムライロード」と呼ばれる昔の街道の43番目の宿場町でした。江戸時代には、宿場町は旅人にとって、宿泊、食事、馬、人足など重要なサービスを提供していました。馬籠宿は、日本でもっとも保存状態の良い宿場町のひとつです。
