福井県立恐竜博物館 Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
After leaving Eiheiji Temple, I drove 25 km to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, one of the world’s top dinosaur museums. I arrived just in time to get a ticket for the 11 a.m. time slot. The museum features around 50 full-size dinosaur displays, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation. Beyond dinosaurs, it also explores Earth’s broader history, with fossils embedded in stone and a beautiful collection of precious gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and opals. You can see both how the stones appear in the ground and how they look once polished. Although the museum is very popular with children, it’s genuinely fascinating for visitors of all ages.
永平寺を後にして、25kmほど車を走らせ、世界有数の恐竜博物館として知られる福井県立恐竜博物館へ向かいました。ちょうど11時の入場枠のチケットに間に合いました。館内には約50体の実物大の恐竜が展示されており、その評判どおり見応えは十分でした。恐竜だけでなく、地球の歴史全体を紹介するコーナーもあり、石に埋まった化石や、ルビー・サファイア・エメラルド・オパールなどの美しい宝石も展示されています。地中にある原石の姿と、磨かれて宝石になった姿の両方を見ることができます。子どもに人気の施設ですが、どの年代の来館者にとってもとても興味深い博物館です。
The Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus) is one of the most famous prehistoric deer species. Despite its name, it's fossils have been found across Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia. The most striking feature of the Irish elk was its enormous antlers, the largest known of any deer species. They could span up to 3.5 meters from tip to tip and weigh 40 kg. Males shed and regrew these giant antlers annually, just like modern deer. With antlers that size, I'm guessing they probably avoided forests. It went extinct roughly 7,700 years ago.

A mammoth fossil. These Ice Age giants once roamed the frozen northern plains, using their long curved tusks to scrape snow in search of grass. Most died out about 10,000 years ago, but a tiny population survived on a remote Arctic island until about 4,000 years ago — long after the pyramids of Giza were built!

Wow — look at the jaw on that thing! This is Gomphotherium, a prehistoric relative of modern elephants. Its bizarrely long lower jaw is thought to have been used to dig up roots of plants growing in marshy wetlands for food.

The main dinosaur area. There are plenty of full dinosaur skeletons to see here, from well known ones to lesser known ones and of course local ones. Many of them dwarf the visitors.

I think this skull belongs to a young Pachycephalosaurus. It looks kind of cute, and could easily be mistaken as a dragon's skull! I wonder if dragon myths started when someone found a dinosaur fossil like this. These dinosaurs have thick, domed heads, which adults may have used for head-butting rivals just like modern goats and rams do. Maybe this one was my favorite of the day.

Another icon of the dinosaur world — the formidable-looking Triceratops. With its three sharp horns and massive frill, it may look like a born fighter, but many scientists believe the frill was also used for display, attracting mates or intimidating rivals. Some researchers even suggest that Triceratops was one of the few dinosaurs capable of standing up to, and possibly killing, a T. rex. Despite its tough appearance, Triceratops was a plant-eater, and at nearly 9 meters long, it had to munch on vegetation all day just to stay full.
恐竜界のもう一つのスター、迫力満点のトリケラトプス。鋭い3本の角と大きなフリルを見ると、生まれながらの戦士のようですが、実はこのフリルは仲間へのアピールやライバルを威嚇するために使われていたという説もあります。ティラノサウルスと互角に渡り合い、場合によっては倒すこともできたと言われる強者です。見た目はゴツいものの草食性で、全長は約9メートル。お腹を満たすために、一日中ひたすら植物を食べ続けていたそうです。
It would have been easy to spend hours here enjoying all the exhibits and information, but I still had a few outdoor spots I wanted to visit and make the most of this beautiful day. So I jumped in my car and headed for Heisenji Hakusan Shrine, just 7 km from the dinosaur museum.
