Although not so far from where I live, I always thought that there wasn't much to see in Fukui Prefecture. But, I was wrong. There is actually a lot to do and see, especially if you like history and nature. I compiled a list of places I wanted to visit around Northern Fukui Prefecture. While waiting for a fine weekend, the list grew longer and I had to chop some places for another day. Finally, I got perfect weather at peak autumn foliage season and hit the road.

My hotel for two nights. I can stretch my legs out fully and sleep quite comfortably in here. I originally planned to stay for just one night on Saturday, but after studying the weather forecast, I decided my best chance of fog forming was on Saturday morning. So just after finishing work at 9 p.m. on Friday night, I jumped in my car and headed for Ono City, Fukui Prefecture.
Around midnight, I came out of a long tunnel into Ono City and was greeted by a police roadblock, a sobriety checkpoint. I was asked to blow onto the end of a long rod and was then allowed to continue on my way. It was an exciting welcome to Ono City.
Having seen fog beginning to form, I crawled into bed around 12:20 a.m., feeling excited and hopeful that fortune would smile on me in the morning.

本当は土曜の夜に1泊だけの予定でしたが、天気予報を見ているうちに、「勝負は土曜の朝だ」と思い直し、金曜の仕事が終わった夜9時、そのまま車に飛び乗って福井県大野市へ向かいました。

I got up at 5:30 a.m. and headed for the trail head in the dark. I was greeted with a 'watch out for bears' sign and a notice that a bear had been seen in the area about a month ago. Prepared and unperturbed, I continued on in the pitch black to my destination.

The path up was a well maintained single track and quite steep in places. Pushing myself to climb as fast as I could, I was huffing and puffing in a race against time to get a good spot for the show.

Jackpot! I had come to see the 'sea of clouds' with Echizen Ono Castle (The Castle in the Sky) sticking up above the fog. This phenomenon can only be seen about ten times a year (and today was already the fourth appearance of this year’s unkai season). It is notoriously difficult to predict. Usually for fog to form, you need a big temperature difference between the day before and the next morning, a clear sky and no wind. But here in Ono City, it is said that rain the day before increases your chances of seeing it. I had all the 3 normal requirements, but no rain. The day before was about 18℃ and the next morning was about 2℃, a perfectly still morning with clear skies.

In Japan, there are expressions for people who always seem to bring rain when they go out, ame-onna or ame-otoko, and for those who always get sunshine, known as hare-onna or hare-otoko. I always say I’m a hare-otoko, a “sunshine man.”
But on this trip, I coined a new phrase for myself: “unkai-otoko,” the “sea-of-clouds man.”
That’s because all three times I’ve visited a famous sea-of-clouds viewpoint, I’ve hit the jackpot.

My car was the only one in the designated parking area when I arrived. It was wonderfully quiet, and I slept well. By the time I woke up, a few more cars had arrived. Home Center Pulse (ホームセンターパルス) kindly allows people who want to climb up to the Sky Castle Observatory to park there. They simply ask that you park at the back so you don’t disturb their customers. There is a large sign on the wall showing how to get to the trailhead, you can see it below. And below that, I marked the parking area with a yellow oval on Google Maps. There is also a Lawson convenience store nearby, as shown in the top-right corner of the map. From the carpark, it takes about 20 minutes to climb up to the lookout.
