「仏御前の滝編」 Hotoke-gozen Falls
Hotoke-gozen was a shirabyōshi, one of the elegant female dancers of late Heian Japan, known for performing in white men’s court robes and dancing with a fan and short sword. In The Tale of the Heike, the medieval epic that recounts the rise and fall of the Taira clan, she appears as a young dancer of striking beauty and talent. Her voice and movement were said to enchant even Taira no Kiyomori, the most powerful man of the age. Like many figures in the Heike, her story is marked by ambition, shifting fortunes, jealousy, and the Buddhist reminder that worldly glory fades like morning mist.
Here in Ono, people say Hotoke-gozen was born in Tochizawa, a small hamlet now lying beneath the waters of Hotokebara Dam, just across the road from the waterfall. According to this legend, she once washed her face and hair at the falls, and over time the place came to be known as Hotokegozen Falls. The water descends roughly 100 meters in three bold stages from Mount Arashima, flowing strongly throughout the year, especially beautiful in the fresh green of spring and in autumn leaf season, which is when I visited.

As I was leaving Heisenji, I drove past the castle again—this time on the opposite side. After doing a bit of research, I learned that this wasn’t actually the original site of Katsuyama Castle at all, but a modern building called the Katsuyama Castle Museum. Standing 57.8 meters tall with six floors, it’s the tallest castle-style structure in Japan. The exterior looks like a traditional castle, but inside it functions as a museum, displaying samurai armor, weapons, historical artifacts, and cultural exhibits. The top floor is an observatory that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. When I lined up my camera with the edge of a rice field, the angle made the building look like the “Leaning Castle of Katsuyama.”
平泉寺を後にして車を走らせていると、またこの城の前を通りましたが、今度は反対側からでした。少し調べてみると、ここは本来の勝山城の場所ではなく、「勝山城博物館」という現代の建物だということがわかりました。高さ57.8メートル、6階建てで、日本一高い“城風”の建造物だそうです。外観はまるで本物の城ですが、中は博物館になっていて、甲冑や武具、歴史資料や文化展示が並んでいます。最上階は展望フロアで、周辺を一望できます。

The carpark at Hotoke-gozen Waterfall fits about five cars. The trail begins with the view you see here: a long, brutally straight staircase shooting up toward the ridge. Sorry, legs ... it’s time for another round of pain! And yes, when you finally reach the top of these stairs, you’re greeted by… even more stairs. But that little spark of adventure kicks in, and somehow my worn-out legs keep going.

とつぶやきつつ登っていくと、案の定、上に着いたところで待っているのは——はい、また階段。
でも不思議なもので、冒険心がちょっとだけスイッチオンして、疲れた足もなんとか働いてくれました。

From the top of the second staircase, it’s an easy walk to the waterfall. It’s difficult to capture the whole thing in one photo, this is definitely a waterfall that really needs a drone to do it justice. Still, if you’re a waterfall fan, it’s absolutely worth the climb to see it up close.

ただ、この滝は全体を一枚の写真に収めるのがなかなか難しく、ドローンがあれば一番きれいに撮れるタイプです。
それでも、滝好きなら登ってくる価値は十分あります。

Looking back down the gully from the waterfall, you can see the gentler section of the trail, the waters of the dam, and the mountains glowing with autumn foliage.

When I got back to my car, I found this little fellow on the ground. Yes, it's a stinkbug with a heart shape on its back. Actually this is the second time I've seen this kind of stinkbug. The first time was in Miyazu City near Takigami Park when I climbing up to Mt. Hiraiwa. It's called 'esaki-monki-tsuno-kamemushi' in Japanese. Based on this, I'll give it the following English name 'Esaki yellow heart horned stinkbug'. Its back is fascinating to look at up close, almost like something crafted by hand.
車に戻ると、地面にこの小さなヤツがいました。そう、背中にハート模様をもつカメムシです。実はこのカメムシを見るのはこれで二度目。最初に見たのは、宮津市の滝上公園近くから平岩山に登ったときでした。「エサキモンキツノカメムシ」と呼ばれています。近くで見るとその背中は本当に魅力的で、まるで誰かが細工を施したかのようです。
From Hotoke-gozen Falls, I drove 8 km back down the valley to Road Station Echizen Ono Arashima no Sato, located at the edge of the plains where Ono City begins. The place was clearly popular. Outside, there was a dog run, a climbing pinnacle for trying out rock climbing, and even a pond where you could experience canoeing. Inside, I found a large Montbell store, a souvenir shop, and a food court. I love a good gourmet burger, so I made a beeline for the burger shop Bunny Superette.
仏御前の滝から谷を8kmほど下ると、平野に広がる大野市の入口にある「道の駅 越前おおの 荒島の郷」に着きました。ここはとても人気のあるスポットのようです。外にはドッグランやロッククライミングが体験できるクライミングピナクル、さらにカヌー体験ができる池までありました。館内には大型のモンベルショップ、土産物店、フードコートがあります。私はグルメバーガーが大好きなので、迷わずバーガーショップ「Bunny Superette」へ向かいました。
It was 2:30 p.m., and I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast. Bunny Superette had 12 Kuroge Wagyu beef burgers on the menu, so I went for the gorgonzola-and-honey burger. It turned out to be a bit of a challenge to eat ... there was so much juice collecting in the bag (thanks, I assume, to the “honey”) that I had to be careful not to make a mess. The gorgonzola also kept sticking to the corners of my mouth. Trying not to look piggy in front of everyone, I ended up focusing more on how to eat the thing than actually enjoying its flavor.
昼の2時半、朝から何も食べていなかったので、そろそろ体が「ごはん下さい」と訴えてくる頃でした。『Bunny Superette』には黒毛和牛バーガーが12種類もあったので、その中からゴルゴンゾーラ＆ハニーバーガーを選んでみました。ところが食べてみると、袋の底に“ハニー”由来と思われる肉汁がたっぷり溜まっていて、こぼさないように食べるのが大変。しかもゴルゴンゾーラが口の端にくっつくので、周りの目も気になって、味わうというより“どう食べるか”に集中してしまいました。
After the burger, I wandered around the Montbell shop and the souvenir shop. Then I decided to try sauce katsudon, Fukui’s well-known Worcestershire-style pork cutlet rice bowl. Unfortunately, this one didn’t go well for me. I couldn’t even bite through the first piece of pork. I turned it sideways and somehow managed to tear it apart with my teeth, but it was as tough as leather and didn’t have much flavor. The other two pieces were only a little better. On top was a big mound of grated daikon, which seemed to be where the sauce was hiding, judging by the color. But the pork itself had almost no Worcestershire taste at all. Maybe I should have researched some restaurants before the trip.

The day after I got back to Miyazu, I happened to spot a bento labeled “Fukui’s famous Worcestershire-style pork cutlet rice bowl.” And it was much cheaper. Naturally, I had to give it a second chance. This time the meat was tender, and the Worcestershire flavor actually tasted great.
After my late lunch at Road Station Echizen Ono Arashima no Sato , I sat on a bench near the dog run, soaking up the last of the afternoon sun as it dropped toward the horizon and watched the dogs chase each other around. Then, feeling recharged, I headed back to Echizen Ono Castle.
