I Feel Alive

京丹後市、味土野ガラシャ大滝　
Midono Garasha Great Falls, Kyotango City

It's time for my autumn adventure. Due to Covid-19, I decided not venture very far from home this time. And thus I decided to go and check out the Midono Waterfall.
秋のアドベンチャーの時間です。新型コロナウイルスのために遠いところに行かないことにしました。こうして味土野ガラシャ大滝を見に行きました。

It's a 20 km drive from my house to my starting point on Kyoto Prefectural Road 53. When I get there, I'm met with an unwanted sign saying the road was closed. Mountain bikes can go anywhere, so I decide to continue up the mountain towards Midono.
京都府道53号網野岩滝線にあるサイクリング起点まで自宅から20㎞です。着くと最悪の看板が山道の入り口にありました。しかし、マウンテンバイクがどこでも行けるから、味土野に向かって山を上り始めました。

It's a long hill climb up to the top through the wilderness with the leaves glowing in the morning sun and the fallen leaves crunching under my tires. The air is nice and crisp and I feel alive.
大自然の中で長い山登りです。葉が朝日の光を浴びて輝いていて、落ち葉の上をザクザクとマウンテンバイクを漕ぎます。秋の爽やかな空気を吸い込んで、​生きてるって感じです。(I feel alive)

As I wind up the mountain road, I pass the sites of abandoned villages and wonder who used to live here in bygone years and what the villages were like.
​くねくねと山道を登っていくにつれて廃村（畑村と吉津村）を通り抜けます。昔には誰がここに住んでいて、どんな生活だったかなと私は思いました。

Recently there has been a lot of news about bears, and so from the time I entered the mountain path, all my senses were on high alert for them. Every noise, every smell and every movement caught my attention. And then I came across it, bear poo in the middle of the road. But it's not so fresh. I zoom in to see what it was eating.
最近、クマ目撃のニューズが多いので恐怖感がいつもより強かったです。どんな音や動きや臭いにも用心深かったです。そして、見ました。山道のど真ん中にクマのフンがありました。新しいフンではなくって、よかったです。何を食べていたかと知りたくて、ズームアップしました。

As I get higher up the mountain, I start to get some views in the distance and can even see The Sea of Japan.
山の上方から絶景が見え、日本海も見えます。

At the top, the leaves are in full autumn colors.頂点では紅葉の見頃でした。

At the top of the mountain I was surrounded by woodpeckers chirping and drumming in trees. I could hear them, but they were difficult to see. The one photo I got was of the woodpecker flying off as I clicked the camera. I have seen Japanese pygmy woodpeckers (kogera) and Japanese green woodpeckers (aogera) before, but this was the first time I'd seen a great spotted woodpecker (akagera). You can hear one chirping and then drumming in the video above.
頂点では私の周りにキツツキが聞こえました。しかし、なかなか見えませんでした。キツツキの写真を撮るチャンスが一つしかなかったです。しかし撮った瞬間にそのキツツキが飛び立ちました。コゲラとアオゲラを見たことがありますが、今回は初めてアカゲラを見ました。上記のビデオに鳴き声とドラミングが聞こえます。

Midono is known as the place where Lady Gracia Hosokawa hid in seclusion for 2 years after her Japanese samurai general father, Akechi Mitsuhide, assassinated the famous warlord, Nobunaga Oda.
細川ガラシャの父である明智光秀が織田信長を討った後、ガラシャが味土野で2年間隠棲しました。

It is said that Lady Garasha used the very soft water from around here when doing her make-up.

It's untreated water, so please refrain from drinking it.

Midono is an interesting place. I'm glad I went to see the falls. I want to go back and photograph those woodpeckers.
味土野が面白いところです。大滝を見に行ってよかったです。またアカゲラの写真を撮りに行きたいです。
