I found these fierce-looking warriors right down the back of the souvenir shop in the Akagawara Building No. 1. Standing imposingly in the dim light beneath the timber rafters of the old storehouse, they practically glowed with energy.
These striking, illuminated paper-sculpture figures are known as Kamikatachi. They are crafted using Inshu Washi, a smooth, fine-textured traditional washi paper that has been a cultural specialty of Tottori Prefecture for over 1,300 years.

The saga of the Satomi begins not with glory, but with a dark and unnatural curse. During the chaotic wars of the Sengoku period, the Satomi clan was pushed to the absolute brink of destruction. Besieged within their own castle walls by a ruthless enemy, defeat seemed inevitable. In a moment of desperation, the lord of the clan made a dark, half-joking vow to his fiercely loyal hound, Yatsufusa: if the dog could somehow cross enemy lines and bring back the head of the rival general, he could have the hand of the lord’s beautiful daughter, Princess Fuse.
Against all human odds, the hound succeeded. He slipped into the enemy camp under the cover of darkness and returned with the general's head, instantly breaking the siege and saving the clan.
Bound by honor to keep his word, the horrified lord had to watch as Princess Fuse, choosing duty over her own desires, left the human world behind. She retreated deep into the misty, sacred mountains of the Bōsō Peninsula to live alongside Yatsufusa. However, the spirit of a wicked, defeated witch had possessed the hound, wrapping a demonic curse around the princess and threatening to corrupt the Satomi bloodline forever.
To cleanse the clan of this malice and protect her family’s future, Princess Fuse made the ultimate sacrifice. Seated atop a mountain peak, she plunged a blade into herself to release the dark energy. As her life faded, a miraculous event occurred. Her sacred Buddhist rosary—a necklace of crystal prayer beads—shattered into the sky. Accompanied by a brilliant flash of white light and holy vapor, eight of the large crystal beads rose high into the heavens.
