1. 稲佐の浜 Inasanohama Beach
I started my trip at Inasanohama Beach, the sacred gateway where myriad deities arrive in the 10th lunar month each year and the site of the 'Kuniyuzuri' myth where the foundation of the Japanese state was first negotiated upon the sands.
私の山陰の旅は、稲佐の浜から始まりました。ここは、旧暦十月に全国から八百万（やおよろず）の神々が降り立つ神聖な入り口であり、日本の国の在り方が砂の上で語り合われた「国譲り」神話の舞台でもあります。

Leaving Miyazu just past 9 p.m. on Friday, I headed down the San'in Coast. I opted for the San’in Kinki and San’in Expressways over the Chugoku Highway; even though both routes take about the same amount of time, the San'in route is 100 km shorter and toll-free until you reach Yonago, saving me ¥7,000. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these expressways; they made for a very smooth drive. After a few hours, I stopped at Seafood Cuisine Kiwami (Kotoura Road Station) to get some shut-eye. When I woke up to continue my westward trek, I was greeted by this view of Mt. Daisen in the morning light..
金曜の夜、21時過ぎに宮津を出発し、山陰海岸を西へと向かいました。中国自動車道ではなく、山陰近畿自動車道と山陰道を通るルートを選んだのですが、所要時間はほぼ同じでも、山陰ルートの方が100kmほど短く、米子辺りまで無料で利用できるため、7,000円も節約できました。これらの自動車道は想像以上に良くて、非常にスムーズなドライブを楽しむことができました。数時間の運転の後、仮眠をとるために「海鮮料理きわみ（道の駅 琴の浦）」に立ち寄りました。西への旅を再開しようと目を覚ますと、朝の光に照らされた大山の姿が目に飛び込んできました。
Historically, Bentenjima (Benten Island) was a true island located offshore. It remained surrounded by the sea until the late 20th century, when shifting sands eventually connected it to the beach. This site plays a central role in the Kamiari-sai Festival. During the 10th lunar month, it serves as the specific location where a welcoming ceremony is held for the countless deities that arrive at the shore of Izumo. For more than 1,300 years, Izumo has continued the Kamiari-sai, a ritual whose origins reach back into Japan’s oldest myths and prehistory.

The Great Transfer: The Myth of Kuniyuzuri
While standing on the sands of Inasanohama, you might be able to imagine the scene from the Kojiki—one of the foundational myths of Japan’s spiritual history. The story begins in Takamagahara (the High Celestial Plain), where the sun goddess Amaterasu decided that the “Central Land of Reed Plains”—Japan—should be ruled by her heavenly descendants rather than the earthly deities.
The Failed Envoys
Before the final confrontation, several messengers were sent from the heavens to persuade Okuninushi, the Great Lord of the Land, to relinquish his rule. However, the first envoys were won over by the land and never returned. Finally, the heavens sent a formidable warrior: Takemikazuchi, the god of thunder and swords.
The Confrontation at Inasanohama
Takemikazuchi descended to the shore of Inasanohama Beach. In a dramatic display of power, he unsheathed his ten-span sword, thrust it upside down into the waves, and sat cross-legged upon the tip of the blade. He then demanded that Okuninushi surrender the land to the heavenly deities.
Okuninushi, ever the diplomat, did not answer directly. Instead, he deferred the decision to his two sons.
Kotoshironushi: He immediately accepted the heavenly demands and withdrew into the sea.
Takeminakata: A fierce deity of strength, he challenged Takemikazuchi to a trial of power—often regarded as one of the mythological origins of Sumo wrestling. Takemikazuchi crushed his opponent’s hands like reeds and pursued him all the way to Lake Suwa in present-day Nagano, where Takeminakata finally surrendered.
The Great Bargain
With his sons’ consent, Okuninushi agreed to relinquish his earthly authority. However, he made one monumental request: in exchange for surrendering his “visible” power, he asked for a magnificent palace to be built in his honor—one so grand that it reached toward the heavens.
This palace became Izumo Taisha, the great shrine where Okuninushi is enshrined today, presiding over the unseen world of spirits, relationships, and human destiny.
