第2回：入江 Part 2: The Cove
At the end of the trail is Fubuki-no-taki (literally 'Blizzard Falls'), with a stone statue of Fudo Myoo in front of it. He's facing the Sotomo Arch.
散策路の終点にあるのは「吹雪の滝」。その前には不動明王の石像が安置されており、蘇洞門の大門・小門の方角を向いています。
CNN listed Sotomo as one of the "36 most beautiful places in Japan." Shaped over millennia by persistent wave action, the Daimon (large arch) and Shōmon (small arch) of Sotomo stand as twin gateways in the coastal cliff. One is grand while the other is more subdued, framing the seaward view in ways that change with each angle. It pairs well with the Fudo Myoo statue and his smaller attendant. It was relatively calm when I visited, but I’d love to see it when big waves are smashing through the arches, too. Perhaps a good excuse for a return trip.

先ほどの不動明王と脇侍の石像とも、よく調和する光景です。私が訪れた時は穏やかでしたが、洞門を突き抜けるような荒波の迫力も見てみたいものですね。再訪する良い口実になりそうです。

I found a good spot right at the water's edge for my first lunch of the day: chicken and taco meat tortillas, followed by a rice ball and a Snickers bar for energy for the ascent. It was a nice, peaceful spot to relax for a bit. I saw some schools of little fish, what I’d call sprats, swimming around the cove, and also a nasty red jellyfish (a Japanese sea nettle).

しばらくの間、のんびりとリラックスできる素敵な場所でした。入り江では、小魚（私がスプラットと呼んでいる魚）の群れが泳いでいて、不気味な赤いクラゲ（アカクラゲ）の姿も見えました。

From my lunchtime vantage point, I could see Mt. Aoba perfectly framed by the large arch. It's nicknamed "Wakasa Fuji" due to its cone-like shape when viewed from certain angles. However, from this angle, you can see its two peaks. It's actually an extinct volcano.
昼食をとった場所からは、大門のなかにすっぽりと収まった青葉山を望むことができました。その円錐形の美しい姿から、見る角度によっては「若狭富士」とも呼ばれていますが、ここからは二つの頂があるのがはっきりと分かります。実はこの山、死火山なんですよ。
Looking back toward the descent into the cove, Fubuki Falls is visible on the left. From the base of the falls, the trail climbs diagonally toward the ridge on the right, disappearing into the wind-sculpted trees.
入江へと下ってきた道を振り返ると、左手に「吹雪の滝」が見えます。滝のふもとからは、右手の尾根へ向かって道が斜めに登っていき、風に形づくられた木々の中へと消えていきます。

I spotted an animal moving up the slope below me and instantly froze (ninja mode) so as not to scare it. It was a Japanese badger foraging for food. They have poor eyesight during the day, so as long as I stayed motionless, there was a good chance it wouldn't flee. It was quite entertaining watching it suddenly speed up and dive head-first into the leaf litter. They like to eat worms and other meaty morsels like insects. I watched it for three or four minutes. Definitely one of the highlights of my hike. You can see it foraging in the video below.

Named after Narcissus, the youth who fell in love with his own reflection, and the narcissus flower that bears his name, the Narcissus Flycatcher lives up to both: dazzling yellow plumage, a clear, ringing song, and a graceful return to Japan each spring to breed. Its Japanese name, キビタキ (Kibitaki), reflects this beauty in a different way. キビ refers to a bright, millet-like yellow, while タキ is thought to derive from an old word linked to small birds or their calls. Together, the name evokes a “bright yellow little songbird,” perfectly capturing the charm of this seasonal visitor.
英名の「Narcissus Flycatcher」は、自らの鏡像に恋をした美少年ナルキッソス、そしてその名に由来する水仙（Narcissus）にちなんでいます。その名に違わず、鮮やかな黄色の羽、透き通ったさえずり、そして毎年春に繁殖のため日本へ戻ってくる優雅な姿を併せ持っています。

Named for its brush-like buds, resembling the tip of a calligraphy brush (筆, fude), the Gentiana zollingeri, known in Japan as fude-rindō, is a fleeting sign of spring. It has small blue flowers that open only in sunlight and close again in shade or cloudy weather, and appears quietly on the forest floor before disappearing just as quickly. I guess I got lucky spotting these ones.
筆の穂先に似た蕾（つぼみ）の形からその名がついたフデリンドウ（筆竜胆）は、春の束の間の便りです。日が当たっている時だけ花を開き、日陰や曇り空では閉じてしまう小さな青い花で、林の地面にひっそりと現れては、あっという間に姿を消してしまいます。今回、この花を見つけられたのは本当に幸運でした。

They were sold out by the time I arrived, so I settled for the standard sauce katsudon. As you can see, the pieces were still humongous. There is actually a bowl of rice hidden under there somewhere!
I savored every bite of the first piece. By the second, I was wondering if my eyes had been bigger than my stomach. By the third, I was certain this was "death by pork." Nonetheless, it was delicious and made for a great story. In the end, I didn't need any dinner.
