4.土蜘蛛伝説 The Tsuchigumo Legend
Long before Japan became a unified country, many independent clans ruled different regions. During the 3rd and 4th centuries, the expanding Yamato court sought to bring these lands under its control. As it pushed north along the Sea of Japan coast, it encountered local people who resisted its authority.
Ancient chronicles such as the Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki describe some of these opponents as tsuchigumo. Most historians believe this was not the name of a race or tribe. Instead, it was a derogatory label used by the Yamato court for groups who refused to submit.
The name literally means "earth spider." Rather than describing monsters, it probably suggested people who hid in forests, mountains, or caves instead of living as the Yamato believed "civilized" people should. It was a way of portraying stubborn enemies as something less than human.
Over the centuries, history and folklore gradually merged.
The people once called tsuchigumo were transformed into giant spiders, demons, and other supernatural beings. Heroes who fought rebellious clans became legendary monster-slayers. Real battles became tales of magic, curses, and impossible creatures.
Mt. Aoba is one of the places where these old traditions survived. According to local legend, a chieftain named Kugamimi-no-Mikasa lived here and defied the Yamato warriors sent to conquer the region. Whether he was a historical leader, a legendary hero, or a blend of both is impossible to know today.
The story that follows is not history, but a retelling of the local legend in the style of an old chronicle. Like all good legends, it may preserve a distant memory of real events hidden beneath centuries of storytelling.

かつて土蜘蛛と呼ばれた人々は、巨大な蜘蛛や鬼、さまざまな妖怪へと姿を変え、彼らと戦った英雄たちは怪物退治の勇者として語り継がれるようになります。現実の戦いは、魔法や呪い、不思議な力が登場する伝説へと変わっていったのです。
青葉山も、そうした伝承が今なお残る場所の一つです。地元に伝わる伝説では、公耳御笠（くがみみのみかさ）という首長がこの山に住み、征討に訪れたヤマトの軍勢に立ち向かったとされています。彼が実在した人物なのか、それとも伝説上の英雄なのか、あるいはその両方の要素を併せ持つ存在なのかは、現在では知ることはできません。
この先に紹介する物語は、歴史そのものではありません。古い年代記を語るような雰囲気で、青葉山に伝わる伝説をもとに再構成した物語です。優れた伝説の多くがそうであるように、この物語にも、何世紀にもわたる語り継ぎの中に埋もれた、遠い昔の出来事の記憶が残されているのかもしれません。
