The Guardians of the Emerald Fall: A Tale of the Iro-Nushi
Long, long ago, when the world was still full of magic, deep in a hidden valley, a giant waterfall crashed down into a shining green pool.
BOOOOSH! SPLASH!
The place was called Emerald Falls. In autumn, the forest around it glowed with bright red, orange, and gold leaves. It looked like the whole world was made of fire and sunshine.

The Grumpy Dragon of the Deep
At the bottom of the falls lived Mizuchi, a great emerald water dragon. Mizuchi loved his home. Every day he swam through the crystal-clear water, making sure it stayed pure and cold.
Mizuchi was a bit of a grump. "One million and one drops... one million and two..." he would count. He liked things to be perfect. But there was one thing he didn’t like. That was the messy autumn leaves that floated into his pool.
“Too messy! Too messy!” he grumbled.

The Dancing Bear of the Wind
Only a short distance away lived Kuma-san, a fuzzy Black Bear with a white crescent moon on his chest. Unlike the dragon, Kuma-san loved the autumn leaves. He was a happy soul who could talk to the mountain winds.
By spinning in circles and waving his giant paws, Kuma-san could create a Whirlwind of Leaves.
Woosh! Woosh! The leaves flew into the air.
He would hop inside the swirling red leaves and ride it through the trees, laughing as the wind tickled his ears.

The Arrival of the Iro-Nushi
One quiet afternoon, the forest suddenly began to turn gray. A group of mischievous Yokai monsters called the Iro-Nushi—The Color Thieves—had arrived.
These strange creatures looked like old, broken umbrellas with long, bendy noses. They didn't eat berries or fish; they ate colors.
“Color… color… slurp it up!” they whispered.
SLURP! A red leaf turned gray.
SCHLOOP! A golden tree lost its color.
Everything they touched became dull and lifeless. The Iro-Nushi were heading straight for the waterfall! If they reached the pool, they would suck the emerald green right off Mizuchi’s scales and turn the magical falls gray and drab.

The Super-Cyclone
Mizuchi the Dragon roared, spraying a huge jet of water to protect his home, but the Iro-Nushi just floated higher, out of reach.
Kuma-san saw the gray shadow spreading. "Hold on, Mizuchi! Let’s work together!" the bear shouted. Kuma-san steered his leaf-whirlwind right to the edge of the water.
Mizuchi dived deep into the pool and then shot upward like a green rocket, wrapping his long body around Kuma-san’s whirlwind. Together, they became a Super-Cyclone of Water and Leaves! It was like a giant, magical washing machine. The spinning wind of the bear and the heavy mist of the dragon created a storm of color and spray.
Spin! Splash! Woosh!
The Iro-Nushi were caught in the middle.
"Too much splashing! Too much color!" the Iro-Nushi squeaked. Their umbrella tops began to shake. Suddenly, POP! POP! POP! they disappeared like soap bubbles, and all the stolen colors came rushing back to the trees.

The Secret Friendship
The forest was saved. The red was redder than ever, and the gold was even brighter.
Mizuchi landed back in his pool with a giant splash. He looked at a single orange leaf floating near his nose. Instead of grumbling, he blew a gentle puff of mist on it to keep it shiny.
"I suppose a little color isn't so bad," the Dragon whispered. Kuma-san just waved a paw and went back to dancing in the leaves.
To this day, if you visit the falls in autumn, you might see the water shimmering like dragon scales and the leaves spinning in a circle. That’s Mizuchi and Kuma-san, still guarding the colors of the world.
