黒井城跡の雲海 'Sea of Clouds' from Kuroi CastleOn November 6th last year, I climbed up to the former site of Kuroi Castle to see the 'sea of clouds'. It was perfect conditions and I was rewarded with spectacular sights. I highly recommend going here, so have finally got around to posting my story now that the 'sea of clouds' viewing season is upon us again. I actually first went here in May last year. You can see that story HERE with some info on its interesting history and surrounding area. NOTE: Click any photo to enlarge. A few of the many deer I dodged on the way to Kuroi Castle. Video: This old guy blew on a conch shell to welcome the rising of the sun. I climbed up the shorter steeper path in the dark. The majority of people climbed up the easier route. I climbed up as fast as I could, but I think you should allow 30 or 40 minutes to get to the top. You probably need to climb up in the dark to enjoy the sunrise. However, if you're scared of the dark mountain forest, you can climb up in the morning light and still enjoy spectacular views of the 'sea of clouds'.
Bear Claw Marks at Hachiman ShrineAt the beginning of December last year, I came across these freshly made bear claw marks on a big old cedar tree in front of Hachiman Shrine. The claws marks are 6 or 7 meters in length. I've never seen anything like it before. It must have been quite a large bear. It gouged out the soft wood under the bark with its claws. Since I couldn't see any of those shavings at the base of the tree, I guess it was targeting that to eat. I don't know if it was a result of the bear claw marks or not, but unfortunately the tree leaves started turning brown some months after that, and now it is dead. There was also a claw mark higher up in the tree. It appears that the bear started off up there, and then got serious below it. At the same time, I noticed 2 smaller cedar trees several meters away from the bigger cedar that also had a freshly made claw mark on them. But they had only a single straight claw mark each. Once again, there were no signs of any shavings at the base of the tree.
徳島県(雨乞の滝) Tokushima Prefecture (Amagoi Falls)From the carpark, you walk up along Konedani River for about 20 minutes to the Amagoi Falls. It's a very pleasant walk up through the forest with several named waterfalls along the way, interesting rock formations and birds singing over the roar of the water. NOTE: Click any photo to enlarge.

One day, when driving on the Maizuru Wakasa Highway just before Kasuga Interchange, I noticed an interesting looking mountain. At that time, I thought, "I wonder if that used to be a castle mountain". So, when I got home, I looked it up. It turned out that it not only had a castle on it in the Warring States period, but also has an interesting history, too. So, without wasting any time, I went there the following weekend. Japanese squirrels are just too cute! There are no squirrels in my home country of New Zealand. The first time I saw a squirrel was in Feb, 2014 during a ride on Mt.Sugiyama, Miyazu. The second time I saw one was in April, 2016 when I had just arrived at Lake Kawaguchi, Yamanashi Prefecture. The next time I saw one after that was in 2021, when I saw one 3 times. One at Izushi Castle in Hyogo Prefecture, one on Mt. Isanago, Kyotango City and one in Miyazu City. I could never take a photo of one though. Then, in March and April this year, I saw the squirrel shown below 9 times (at the time of writing). At last, I was able to get some good photos and videos. I want it to be my wild pet that lives in the mountains! NOTE: Click any photo to enlarge.
