Translation of the above Japanese about the town I was in. At Hokitika, you can touch upon the town's rich history, including gold, green stone and ship wreaks. The settlement of Hokitika began from 1860 after gold was found on the South Island's west coast. There was an important river port here, but the notorious Hokitika sandbar changed with every rise and fall of the tide and many ships ran aground. If you walk the historical sight-seeing route, you can see several splendid old buildings. The Arahura River which flows into the sea just north of the town has been known as a source of a type of New Zealand jade called pounamu (greenstone) since ancient times. There are galleries within the town specializing in pounamu jewelry and handicrafts. Gold ornaments, wooden crafts, ceramics also make good souvenirs. The wild foods festival held at the end of summer is the signature event of Hokitika. NOTE: Click any photo to enlarge.
